Religious discrimination not permitted

Danmarks Radio: Published on 29. jul. 2014 12.43 English

In a feature published on Monday in Danish daily Berlingske, Liberal Party political spokesperson Inger Støjberg proposed differentiating the requirements for immigrants based on whether they come from “a Christian United States” or “a Muslim Pakistan”.

However, this appears to be in direct violation of paragraph 70 of the Danish Constitution on discrimination based on religion.

“You cannot systematically discriminate based on national origin or religion in relation to people’s fundamental political and civil rights,” said Jacob Mchangama, lawyer and director of the think tank Justitia.

“The fundamental rights of residents of Denmark cannot depend on whether they are Muslims or Christians,” said Mchangama.

Equality before the law
Mchangama could not definitely say whether Støjberg’s proposal would violate the Constitution, as there has not been any specific proposal from the Liberal Party and the exact content of the proposal remains unclear.

However, it does not harmonise with the principle of equality before the law if people from Muslim and non-Muslim countries do not have the same rights, explained Mchangama.

“It doesn’t mesh very well with equality before the law if you come to Denmark and cannot enjoy the same rights because you were born in a country that is not in the west and is predominantly Muslim, compared to a person who comes from a non-Muslim country, regardless of the fact that they are otherwise equal,” said Mchangama.

In the feature, Støjberg writes that it is not necessary to make the same requirements for all, as there are major differences in the “willingness to integrate” between a “Christian American” and a “Muslim Somali” who comes to Denmark.

Momodou,The feature author Støjberg (Liberal Party political spokesperson ) is obviously entitled to AN OPINION, BUT,
I can see this "feature" will be at the forefront of Danish news for some time and be discussed and argued over,

Ahhhhhhh.......................politics is SO interesting, REALLY ?

Wars Going on everywhere, people suffering hunger,Ebola in Africa, water shortages in many countries a bit of action is needed before talk talk talk by politicos who appear to have only political advancement for themselves or their party!!!!.

At least it will distract attention from what's going on in Gaza or she is preparing ground for the next elections.
