2. FOROYAA EDITORIAL: HOW WILL THE PRICE OF RICE BE BROUGHT DOWN AND WHEN? WILL IT BE IN 2016?
The key theme of the dialogue of the people’s tour is to ensure rice self sufficiency by 2016. However, what is of immediate concern to Gambians is the escalating price of rice.
Currently, the price for the lowest quality of rice is 975 dalasi in some places and 1020 dalasi in other places.
The price of rice of better quality stands at 1500 dalasi for the 50 Kilogram bag. It is the affordability of rice that is now in question.
The president has not explained how his government intends to lower the price to make it affordable to those who are paid less than 1000 dalasis by the government and those who feed extended families from an income of less than 5000 dalasi per month.
The major problem confronting family men and women is the high cost of living. Many extended families consume more than two bags of rice a month. Some may be rice growers, but others are rice consumers.
How the income of the consumers would grow to enable them to purchase rice and how the price of rice could be reduced to make it affordable to the consumers has not been addressed during the president’s tour. We hope this will be addressed before the end of the tour. We are waiting to air the views to the masses. |

Minister Bala Jahumpa injured in convoy accident
The Point: Wednesday, April 23, 2014
The Point can confirmed, after receiving the information from good sources, that roads and transport minister Bala Garba Jahumpa was admitted at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul during the Easter break, after his vehicle in the presidential convoy was involved in an accident, caused by a bull which crossed the road. This news has been circulating in town, prompting our reporter to visit the hospital in Banjul and another to call the police for confirmation, without success.
The hospital’s medical director was not in his office, and his principal secretary asked our reporter to “come back today”.
The police would not comment on matters of the “presidential convoy”.
However, before we went to press, the accident was confirmed by senior government and ruling party officials contacted to do so.
“Sir, we understand that the minister was involved in an accident,” our reporter asked on the phone, and a senior government official kindly obliged: “Yes, the minister was involved in an accident, but I cannot give any details.”
Top ruling party officials with the presidential entourage in the provinces, were reached by phone last night and we learned from them that Bala Jahumpa was, indeed, admitted at the hospital in Banjul.
There it was discovered that he sustained fractures in his backbone, and he will be evacuated today for Dakar en route to Spain for further treatment, our sources added.
Reports yet to be confirmed added that the driver of the vehicle was also admitted at the same hospital.
It is likely that the minister’s vehicle had other passengers, but it is not clear what happened to them, or whether any other vehicle(s) in the convoy was affected.
