A close friend in Gambia has asked for help with a naming ceremony.
Can anyone confirm what the expectations are re food, entertainment, clothes etc and an idea of costs in £.
It seems very expensive to me and I am wary of spending so much on one day.
Can you do it cheaply without loosing face in the community, or are expectations always high?

Oh dear Gambiabev, exactly how long have you been in love with Gambia and Gambians ? and have yet to realise that you are a toubab,( I suppose U R anyway !!) MOST Gambians see toubabs as money on legs, ,sorry Gambians but its true, I also love Gambia and its people BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE GAMBIAN SYSTEM OF MYMA MYMA!!!,don't know about the spelling but I don't think that matters, Gambians returning to Gambia after traveling outside the country for a period of time will also suffer this from MANY Gambians who have not traveled, can you please explain to Gambiabev who has yet to understand this unfortunate bit Gambian culture.

hi there,
I would offer to pay for one thing only, maybe the price of a large bag of rice or some food stuff, like oil, onions. Ask them the cost and offer a donation. this way you can make the choice to buy all the items they want or just a token gesture. the costs can run away with you.

Thanks Jambo. I think I will give a donation. Then they have to decide what is priority.
