Where is the correct place to post item such as this in Bantaba in Cyberspace ? and hopefully get opinions on this horrific practice that has again been highlighted in the press,Culture,Health and nutrition ?. A suitable topic name for discussion for items like this I cannot imagine. What can be done? This practice is not new and more deaths would probably occour if not for places like the S.O.S villages.

" it was already too late for any support as the child was already dead."

That just goes to show that almost 6 years this "horrendous practice" has been going on and discussed in public.

After writing on this subject on many occasions i just thought that in many cases the mother who dumps her child as mentioned in the article may be a frightened teenager. However she could also be a married woman having an extramarital affair. Or a young woman in domestic service or a woman being physically or sexually abused. The bottomline is we just don't know. But what is certain is she is in pain and will carrry the scares for the rest of her life.

I have not mentioned the child who sadly lost its life, and although it was found dead as their hasn't been post-mortem report done on the baby it's speculation how the baby died. I think more empathy could be shown to the mother to encourage her to come forward. To get medical assistance and psychoglocial support.

Until there is a more case studies down into baby dumping a campaign of chastisement stereotyping and lecturing can only go so far having a better understanding of the Baby Dumping Syndrome will help to put in place preventive measures before children are dumped. Women and girls need to know they have more than two choices in life.

Peace

Sister do u know if women perform terminations in the villages? Or is baby dumping the only way to be free from an unwanted baby?

Is abortion allowed in Muslim culture?

Clearly the key is empowerment and education of women and freely available contraception so that less unwanted babies are born.

baby dumping is the last stand for most women, I have met girls/women who have had children out of wedlock, both muslim and christian. The child is just kept in the family, when you ask questions you are told the father has travelled.
i do not think illegitamacy is the problem, but do agree with Sister Omega that other factors come into the matter.

Social Welfare coordinator raises concern over baby-dumping
africa » gambia
Monday, February 24, 2014
The West Coast regional Social Welfare coordinator, Haruna Badjie, has lamented the rate of baby-dumping within the region.

Badjie, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with this reporter, disclosed that since his office was opened, in November 2013, they have registered five cases of baby-dumping in the region.

The regional coordinator said child protection committees were established in the various communities, tasked with the responsibilityof sensitising the people onchild abuse and child neglect.

He commended the Gambia police for their collaboration and commitment towards arresting the situation.

Badjie announced that a children’s court has been set up to prosecute anybody found wanting.

Sharing his thoughts on the causes of baby dumping, the social welfare officer said the reasons are many, and include family issues, paternity disputes, men running away from their responsibilities, and poverty, among others.

He described the act as a serious crime against the laws of the land, and that punishment is harsh.
