During my stay in Gambia in April on most days we went to the Palma Rima Hotel as we have stayed at this hotel previously and we love the pool at the hotel. I travel with my 8 year old son.
Everyday we spent at the pool we both ate at least one meal each and we drank plenty spending well over D1500 each visit. Yes I knew i could get cheaper food and drinks by just popping outside the hotel or even just to the hotel shop, but as i was using the pool and not staying at the hotel i felt it was only right to spend my money at the hotel. I also tipped well each day to my waiter.
As it was the last weeks of the season the hotel was very quiet and there were very few guests at the hotel and even fewer staying around the pool area. Our last day at the pool there were only 8 of us and we were all very glad of each others company.
The next day as we entered the hotel i was told by the reception staff that as i was not a guest at the hotel i had to pay D300 to use the pool. There were no signs up to say that non guests need to pay to use the pool. Obviously i wasnt very happy about this and asked to be shown a sign or information stating that i needed to pay this charge.
There was nothing they could show me to prove that i needed to pay to use the pool and nothing to prove what the actual charge was. I asked for the hotel manager to be told that he had travelled and that one gentleman was the duty manager altho he wore no badge or uniform and basically could of been anyone.
I explained that i was not "only" using the pool that every visit i was spending alot of money eating and drinking at the hotel therefore as i was actually spending alot more than D300 each visit couldnt they forego this charge especially as they had nothing to confirm i needed to pay this.
They refused to let me use the pool unless i paid the D300. Oh n that was D300 EACH! I thought that the charge was unreasonable especially when i was actually eating and drinking at the hotel.
I could understand if the pool area was too full, i could understand if i was taking my own food and drink into the hotel. But the hotel was to be closed in just a few days as the season ended, the staff had to be there until that time so i was not causing any extra work for anyone.
I didnt pay and took my custom elsewhere. So they lost money and stopped their staff earning tips.
