PRESIDENT JAMMEH GIVES D10M TO FLOOD VICTIMS
Africa » Gambia

Thursday, September 09, 2010
The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has donated the sum of D10M to help in relief efforts for people affected by floods in the country.

The president's gesture came in the wake of recent torrential rains that devastated parts of the Greater Banjul Area and Western Region, displacing a large number of households. Out of the amount donated, D5M will be used for humanitarian emergency response relief (provision of rice and oil to the victims) while the remaining D5M will be used for developmental aspects.

This information was disclosed to reporters by Essa Khan, the executive director of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) at a press briefing held Wednesday at the Office of the Vice President at State House in Banjul. Speaking at the ceremony, Khan used the opportunity to express sincere gratitude to President Jammeh and his entire cabinet on behalf of the beneficiaries for the assistance he has rendered to the disaster victims over the years, adding that this shows the highly political commitment and dedicated leadership of the government of The Gambia. "The leadership is pro-active as they act urgently when it comes to disaster relief efforts. In this country when it comes to disaster interventions, there is leadership by example," he said.

He explained that regional coordinators all over the country collect data ranging from infrastructure damages, people with physical disabilities, pregnant women, and houses destroyed, among a host of other things. He continued: "This data is very comprehensive but for the sake of the rice and oil that is going to communities, we have decided to come up with data that is most appropriate for those interventions. However, out of the D10M provided by the Gambian leader, D5M will be used to cater for the 17,739 people affected as at now countrywide. As the assessment is ongoing, we may have additional people who might be affected and the NDMA under its Governing Council has decided to spend close to half a million dalasis from its National Emergency Fund with the approval of the council to provide butter stocks, to cater for extra people who might join the number of people affected so far at the end of the assessment."

Khan went on to explain that the items donated by Muslim Aid-Gambia office will also be part of the stocks that will be immediately distributed to the people in KMC, WR and Banjul. The NDMA boss however stressed that the role of the government is to look at how the water flows, as in some cases people build their houses on waterways, which causes the collapse of some buildings. He said: "So the role of the government is to help municipalities, councils and other partners to be able to identify waterways as well as to ensure that there are mitigation processes at the community levels in order to mitigate and reduce the impacts of floods when they happen."

Below is the list of food items to be distributed to the disaster victims across the regions.

Here is a note for Bev from one of my Gambian relatives.

quote:
...... there is more rain in the Gambia this year and many houses are flooded. About 17,000 people have already been displaced by the floods!!! A devastating situation, but the government is doing its best to mitigate the effect.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.
