Great idea, fine the driver not the person who dropped the litter,I wonder if the drivers of those new big green busses will incur any fines if their passengers throw litter ? Just a thought.Car drivers are alright they can afford a car,no problem with getting the fine money there then,Surley it must be realised that litter from motor vehicles is the smallest part of the rubbish and filth that is deposited by the AVERAGE Gambian in the gutters and streets, cant do very much about that the AVERAGE Gambian has very little money, ergo a fine is rather useless!!
Snippet: He also uses this communication to remind the general public about the Anti-Littering Regulations passed into law by His Excellency the President of The Republic Sheikh Professor Dr. Alhagie Yahya A.J.J.Jammeh. Thus the following are the offence and their related fines:
OFFENCES FINES
1. Throwing of any litter from motor vehicles in streets
and along highways (driver is held responsible) D1000 to D5000

A good starting point would be teaching environmental awareness in schools. |

Toubab, Bev actually has a brilliant point. I personally experimented with that idea at the high school I taught. I conducted special 'envt. awareness classes' for students (one top civil servant now took part in some of those classes as a student), and also organized seminars for teachers (of all subjects- English, math, science, what not) on how to incorporate environmental themes into their lessons to help raise student awareness about key envt. issues such as littering, pollution, deforestation, etc. But then I had to leave, with my dream of an environmentally sound Gambia . |

"my dream of an environmentally sound Gambia " Nothing at all wrong with dreaming, its very sad though I find that dreams very seldom turn into reallity,I was not poking fun at Bev as I think that thats the impression that you may have got,its always a very very good idea to make children aware of everything at a young age weather it be telling the truth, working hard, not hurting people and all the rest of the good things in this world that have a very hard job keeping in front of the bad things that tend to overshadow everything nowerdays. |
