Over a period of several years recently, as you read the Gambian papers; particularly the pro-government media, you cannot help noticing a penchant for the repetitive use of certain words and phrases. Many of these words and phrases are in many ways symbolic of the new Gambia- a Gambia of political and cultural standardization where loyalty, total submission, sycophancy, and a near deification of political power is taking root.
Here are a few words and phrases that succintly capture the mood of the Gambia today. These words and more pervade the Gambian media and discussions today. Please add to the list:

1. crave your (usually the president or the court) indulgence...
2. temper justice with mercy ...
3. magnanimous/magnanimity (usually refering to the president's generousity, but perhaps also his corrupt and extravagant excesses...
4. gratitude and appreciation (to the president-all praises be to the most high)...
5. another manifestation (of the president's love of the Gambia and humanity)...
6. numerous development projects (as a cover for the human rights atrocities committed daily)...

Kay:
If you work for "pro-government media" where the administration rules with an iron fist you are somewhat restricted in what you can write,I have read quite often in the Gambian press of "sensitization programmes" on this and that some of these programmes are aimed at journalists,to show them the "correct" way to file their stories and reports,if you want to run a newspaper in the Gambia you have to play by the rules.
