Foroyaa Editorial : A PRESIDENTIAL TOUR OR AN APRC PARTY POLITICAL CAMPAIGN?
By Publisher
14-07-10

The President of the Republic is currently on tour. In a genuine Democratic Society there is separation between party political activity and state activity.

The Constitution of the Gambia is very clear on the role of those who occupy the offices of the land.. All Gambians should memorize these very words of the constitution:
‘The sovereignty of the Gambia resides in the people of the Gambia from whom all organs of the Government derive their authority and in whose name and for whose welfare and prosperity the powers of government are to be exercised.” In short, powers of government are to be exercised to promote the prosperity and general welfare of the people.

Why then should the president go on tour as a state function? The answer is simple.

Section 222 of the Constitution, paragraph 15 states that “The President shall undertake a Nation wide tour at least twice a year in order to familiarize himself or herself with current conditions and the effects of government policies”

Hence the sole purpose for going on a Nationwide tour is to find out what the current realities of the people are and whether Government policy is enhancing prosperity and general welfare or not..

This tour should have been preceded by general sensitisation for the people to turn out in their numbers and boldly tell the president what their problems are, highlight the policies that are working and make recommendations. For example, farmers have told Foroyaa that bumper harvest is inconceivable in the absence of fertilizer, seeds and farming implements. Land disputes are in abundance. Young people from the rural area are completing school without any visible sign that they could get employment. Adequate schemes are not available to promote self employment that yields income sufficient to guarantee a prosperous way of life.

Foroyaa has been informed by farmers that the Action Aid scheme which enabled them to have seeds, fertilizer and farming implements are viable and should be replicated by government.

The Gambian people do not need the tour of the President to be a platform to show who declared loyalty to the APRC or how the party will fare in the next cycle of elections.

Foroyaa is monitoring the tour and will form an opinion after the tour as to whether it is a Presidential tour or a campaign trail. Our readers should assist us in our assessment. The President of the Re public should be and should be seen to be one serving the interest of all Gambians who are or aims to be productive irrespective of party affiliation or non affiliated status. There is time for state-person ship and a time for partisanship

Jammeh is totally unfit to be a national leader. He has lot of bias and self seeking. Here is the evidence:
