''GABU, 22 June 2010 (IRIN) - Each year a minority of Koranic students, or talibés, put under the care of a religious leader who then exploits and abuses them, are reunited with their families by child protection agencies. But after overcoming the challenge of tracing their parents, reintegrating ex-talibés into family life can be difficult as they have known little more than begging and beatings since their infancy, say child protection NGOs.''

This is very disgraceful and unfortunate. Any adult who earns a living by compelling non-biological children in their custody to work should be locked up.
Why can't the government make these kids say who their "masters" are? The masters should then be arrested and the children handed to NGOs like AMIC.
These slavers are as wicked or even more violent than the pedophiles chilling in Rome. |

I know, but somehow I also blame the parents. I find it hard to believe that parents can just give up their children like that to quranic teachers and cut all ties from the child without even trying to find out how the child is doing. Then again, since these parents do not want the children for whatever reason, I don’t know why they had them in the first place. Silence is the enemy. Nobody wants to rock the boat. The governments should take charge and put these children in some form of homes. I wouldn’t have sent them back to their parents since many of them don’t even want them back as apparent in the report. They should also close down these sort of 'schools'.

Tamsier your words and article in the link make very sad reading,it is quite a shock to realise that such conduct is still quite prevelent today, but there has obviously been some improvement in recent times because the article states:"AMIC now closely follows each child’s progress over two years, which has caused the number of runaways to plummet." Never the less one incident is too much, these evil men who abuse children in such a way must not be tolerated. |

You are right Tamsier, the sperm and egg donors should bear the bulk of the blame. However, we shouldn't be too harsh on them because most of these villagers are very gullible illiterates who would readily donate their child to anyone purporting to be "religious."
Keep in mind that these same villagers would give a significant portion of their harvest (after toiling under the blistering sun) to these gangsters with the hope of having mere "good luck."
The feeble mindedness and gullibility of our people is sometimes very saddening. Most of them would trust almost everything "foreign." |

You speak a lot of sense here. Your last two paragraphs in particular sums up the problem. |

Good question. It shows the side of islam in our region that people would rather not discuss. |

We don't have this in Sarajevo, Tirane, Tuzla. Not in Toronto. Not in Baku. And we are Muslim. Or Istanbul. Or Kazan. Or Almaty. Not in Sivastopol. That is probably just like tobaski, something Muslims inherited from Serere animism. |

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

And how many people commented? Only one - when you posted the link. Why was it also put under General forum and not under religion forum when the issue is about Islam? |

Toubab, in as much you wish to make readers engage in topics, people comment by their free will. It is funny that you keep trying to push folks to comments on things they have no interest in. Topics like this have been discussed in the past. And it is abundantly clear that, the Almudo practise is not a Gambian problem. Most Gambians read about it just like you, we are not experts in this matter. However, if anyone feel that you can tarnish the image of Islam because Sheik B is doing something wrong, be my guest. We all condemned this act and it has been made clear that, this are unique regional issues. Many Muslims across the globe have no idea of this kind of behaviour. I have commented on similar subject in the past that, the practice is borne out of greed and the unwillingness to by the Serigns to tell parents that they cannot feed the children and teach them at the same time. The blame here lies with the parents, teachers, and government. This is nothing to do with islam or Muslims, it is a problem of particular region or more appropriately tribe. The Madina Kunas region to some parts of Guinea.. Hence, the foolish generalisation is childish as usual. |

I did not want to jump into this one but since the toubab and tamsier want to continue prosecuting islam by using the behaviour of imbecile marabouts as evidence here I come. First of, I ignored this post because Tamsier's modus operandi is to cruise the net and find negative stuff committed by "muslims" and start generalizing it and use it as a basis for his war against islam. For the umpteenth time my serere brother, ISLAM and MUSLIM are not synonymous. Unsurprisingly and unashamedly, Toubab will always jump in appearing to be "innocent or ignorant" as to what is going on. Time and again, you guys have been playing what we call in basketball terms "pick and roll" on islam.
Using the Quran as a basis for turning children into slaves and beggars has no basis is Islam. Rather it is indeed such dispicable behaviour that islam comes to change. If you truely want to prosecute islam, do so on the evidence it came with and lets see if you get anywhere. Using muslims to to debunk islam ain't gonna take you anywhere. In fact, I challenge you to continue try that method and see if you get anywhere.
I like many other people here studied how to read the Quran from other people besides our parents. My oustas's name (may Allah have mercy on him) is Sellu Jallow. He was a firewood seller from Guinea who never charged a single butut, nor sent anyone on the streets to beg. He sold his firewood and fed his family till the day he died. It is because of examples of such unmeasured selflessness that I have an enormous amount of respect for the Fulas. In my case, Sellu lived in my neighbourhood so all I had to do was show up three times a day and learn how to read the quran free of charge. May Allah reward him abundantly
The Almudu problem today however started in totally different circumstances. The original almudus worked together with their masters or members of the master's original family members fully in tow on their masters farms as a way of paying for their way towards getting their education. This is subsistence farming going on here not any form of commercial farming. The proceeds of these farms are used to feed and clothe the family in which the almudu now fully belonged in. Such an arrangement was feasible to all parties because of the level of poverty in those days. There was nothing like monetary tuition in those days.
The reason there was no monetary tuition involved back in the day and to this present day in some cases like in mine is that those Marabout are selflessly teaching people the quran with the hope of being rewarded by the Allah in the hearafter. If my Oustas were to ask for tuition my parents would have paid but he didn't. I am sure many on here will attest to the same facts.
Fast forward to today. The Almudu marabouts in question today do not want to farm or work a day in life. They will rather enslave children than live on their own sweat or efforts. In short they have turned such a solemn and sacred endeavour into a sophisticated scheme bent on enriching themselves at the expense of others. So blame them for their greed, but do not conclude that it is a problem that islam created. It is not.
To conclude, there is no justification in islam for enslaving children, people or what have you in name of teaching them the Quran. The Quran and Islam are completely innocent of such a crime. It is we who sometimes call ourselves "muslims" who engage in such behaviour. I hope Tamsier and Toubab will take the time to understand what I wrote...if you are truely interested in studying the religion of Allah, study islam, do not study the muslims.
