"...For an academic institution, such populism would once have been unthinkable. Traditionally an honorary degree was a university’s way of marking excellence and achievement. Cambridge claims it only awards them to “members of the royal family, British subjects who are of conspicuous merit or have done good service to the state or to the university, and foreigners of distinction”. The roll call of those deemed sufficiently worthy by the university includes Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa and, this year, jazz musicians John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine.
The reason universities are willing to confer honours on celebrities is that both sides win. The university gets publicity by reaching out an academic hand of welcome to someone famous, while the personality gets to wear scarlet gowns with silk facings and soft black velvet bonnets — sometimes with a golden tassel....
The first occasion an honorary degree was awarded was in 1478 or 1479, to Lionel Woodville, dean of Exeter and brother-in-law of Edward IV. Oxford made him a doctor of canon law in a blatant bid to win the favour of a powerful man...."
Eintein may have been awarded an honorary degree, but he had also obtained his real degrees including a PhD. |

Empty barrels makes the most noise!!!! Despotic leaders who has nothing to show for it fills their resumes with honorary degrees from aliens....
An honorary degree has no use after the day it has been presented to yah... it is like recognizing your presence and that's about it...
Moe we need to see your honorary degrees as well.... because you got nothing else to show...
You will be followed to the cleaners....
1. We know that real honorary degrees are awarded by university officials, not govt. officials. Some politics here? 2. We also know that some of this (honorary) back door degrees come with hefty prices. It is a "pay-to-play" game. 3. Did the Chairman achieve anything extra-ordinary in the area of diplomacy to warrant recognition with a doctorate degree? Or is it that the Russians are just massaging the Sheikh's ego in order to have access to the Gambian market, resources, and goodwill. I think Russian just recently also opened an embassy in Banjul, is that right? |

What business? Jesus has leaked the secret already. All that white powder, they call 'flour', in the Kanilai bakery is nothing but coke. The business empire running across West Africa ( Senegambia, Guinea B, Guinea C, Liberia, etc) has collapsed. No cocaine, no money, no foreign exchange! That is why prices are shooting up recently. Did you notice the value of the Dalasi nose-dived recently?

Karamba, I refuse to accept that the Chairman would accept trash from every diploma mill that comes along. He already has all the titles even an Efulefu would aspire for.
Come on, it's like being a student at Banjul Academy or ICE, no one took them seriously.
Well, Prince, if you think there is no enough empty room to house all that Chairman craves for, be informed then. Not only does Chairman covet the titles of highly educated persons, he wants to be called the biggest butcher, joy maker, cement dealer, medical doctor, bread seller, land owner, house builder, dictator of development, just to stop there. But yes, H E wants everything and there is sufficient empty room to house all the cattle, dogs, crocodiles, bees, snakes, drummers, wrestlers, beauty queens, famous people, and of course every title anyone can get.
That is Yaya Jammeh, fortunately; the pride of Gambia. |

Sorry Kayjatta I do not involve in Idle talk, Tell me something productive and maybe you shall get a response from me. A drunk rambler is kinda hard to deal with. This is why Gambian politics will never evolve into something meaningful. You ran away with your family to so called safety but just remember there are People living in Gambia with their children and families but being such a backward individual from a backward upbringing, this type of attitude and behavior is to be expected...............................Peace quote: Originally posted by kayjatta
