Oh did I kill the discussion then? You know I always try to analyse based on facts, Turk . It would be great if the Gambia is in the "green zone" on the "Failed States Index" with Norway, or with U.K.and U.S. and the other more stable countries (in the "yellow zone"). However, the fact that the Gambia is way below Somalia, Kenya, Nigeria, etc is still no cause for excuse for what obtains in the Gambia today. There is a lot of room for improvement! |

Well, Gambian is not being in the yellow zone is not a coincidence. There are reasons for it. I will repeat, Gambia has social-economic-political problems. The leadership alone is not going to solve anything. I think everyone wants Gambia to improve. If Jammeh gone today, there would not be significant change (as you identify/acknowledge, even with the previous leadership, Gambia would not be in different ranking). Gambians problem more serious. One problem is that there is no capable alternative.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

TURK writes. "Gambians problem more serious. One problem is that there is no capable alternative." I am sorry to say that is a fact, there are no policies to work from,to improve the "social-economic-political problems." that exist now. |

Well true, the Gambia has other perhaps more pressing issues as indicated by the FSI such as population pressure and gender imbalance, and perennial economic decline; than human rights issues. But the fact that there is a political alternative at all in the restrictive political environment of the Gambia is an achievement. I think there is a capable alternative in the Gambia. What I think is lacking is the conducive democratic culture for the opposition to express itself effectively. In a country where all the organs of the govt as well as the media are controlled by the executive, and where dissent is "mercilessly crushed", and the safest thing for all citizens is to openly express absolute loyalty to the govt. of the Sheikh Professor; a capable alternative is not likely to emerge... |
