Extra Hundred Million Dalasis for Gov’t Spending
By Saikou Jammeh

The Government of The Gambia has been authorized to take an extra sum of one hundred million dalasis from tax payers’ money to fund her activities an amount not budgeted for during the main appropriation.

Over three hundred billion was initially allocated for government’s spending for the year under review, but half-way into the year, the vice president Monday presented at the Assembly for approval, the Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2010, requesting for more money on behalf of the Finance Minister.

Isatou Njie-Saidy said government urgently needed one hundred million dalasis to finance certain programmes in key government sectors.

According to the bill, D4m is added to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to cater for the movement of diplomatic staff; D16m for contingency; D30m to meet the part payment of GRTS satellite project and D10m to fund the newly created Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency.

Also D40m goes to the Ministry of Health of which D15m goes to Riders for Health to meet the shortfall in the RVTH budget and D15m to meet shortfall in purchase of pharmaceuticals. And D10m is allocated to meet the payment of current and outstanding bills to NAWEC.

Hon. Cherno Cham of Lower Niumi who seconded the motion told colleagues not to waste time on the bill since it is urgently needed to fund activities which are crucial.

Hon. Sedia Jatta however, raised concern that such requests need to be detailed to indicate the items government wants to purchase.

Gambians should thank God for having Sidia Jatta in the National Assembly. He must be one of the few, if not the only one, raising the right issues and asking the right questions. Unfortunately he cannot stop any bill or make a major impact with APRC majority in the house. He said he no longer feels safe in current Gambia; he raised concerns over the Gambia-Qatar deal that enables Gambians to travel and work in the Gulf State; he recently asked the education minister an important question regarding the feeding of school children; and he's absolutely right to say that government should detail out what they are going to use the requested sum for... it's called transparency.

We in the UK had a similar problem with the last administration, this new one is making sweeping changes which the money men approve,I understand that the £ has shown a vast increase in value compared with the Euro countries, who still havnt got their act together,Job losses will be significant in the public sector in years to come, the thinking is whay pay vast numbers to work in the public sector which is paid for by the taxpayers, much better to alow private enterprises to flourish and make money for THE COUNTRY.
