Parliamentarians Tour Arabic Schools By Ousman Touray
The National Assembly select committee on education recently arrived in Upper River region as part of their nation-wide tour of Arabic schools in the country.
The aim of the tour is to assess the condition of Arabic Schools (Madrasas) with a view to promoting quality education. The schools visited in URR were Koba Kunda, Alunharr, Gambisara and Koina.
Oustas Eassa Darboe the Secretary General of Islamic Arabic education in the Gambia, who led the delegation, expressed delight at the tour and hailed the communities for their commitment to educating their children.
The vice chairman of the National Assembly education committee, Hon Borry L.S. Colley said tour affords them the chance find-out facts about the Arabic Schools.
He told this reporter that they have discussed with the schools and figured out that some of the challenges facing them are inadequate qualified teachers.
He also said that teachers are paid by the communities.
These, he assured would be forwarded to the National Assembly in a bid to provide remedy.
"We want the Madarasas to also produce scientists, doctors and engineers," Hon. Kolley said.
The deputy Speaker of the Nation Assembly Hon. Abdoulie Bojang also speaking to our reporter said enhancing the quality of education in the Madrasas is significant in the development of the country.
Bojang said the contribution being made by the communities (D15.00 monthly) to pay the teachers is too demanding. He urged the government to intervene.
The visiting Parliamentary Committee members included the Deputy Speaker Honorable Abdoulie Bojang, the majority leader Honorable Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Hon Ebrima Jammeh, Hon. Momodou S. Touray, Hon Borry L.S. Colley, Hon Cherno Cham, Hon Bafaye Saidy Khan and Hon Matarr Kujabi.
