Darboe Ready to Face Challengers As UDP Congress kicks off Tomorow By Saikou Jammeh
Opposition-United Democratic Party is going to congress this weekend and the party leader says he is ready to face anyone willing to contest against him for the leadership.
"That is the beauty of democracy. Those are the ideas and ideals we believe in. The party belongs to the people who are free to choose their leaders," Darboe told The Daily News Thursday prior to his departure to the provincial town of Jarra Soma venue for the congress.
Nearly five hundred delegates from across the country are expected to converge in Jarra this weekend for UDP’s second congress ever, the first held in 1997.
United Democratic Party was formed after the lifting of the ban on political parties in 1996, which was instituted following the 1994 ousting of the civilian government by the current military-turned civilian government.
It has become The Gambia’s most popular opposition political party and has since been led by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, whose popularity in the party is rarely put to the test.
Darboe’s chances of leading the party to next elections have been questioned in some corners as rumours spread that he would be beyond the age limit of 63, but the lawyer cum politician has cast doubts as he celebrated his 61st birthday last year.
However, party members are converging in Jarra Soma to among others elect a new executive. According to our sources, up to five party members want to contest the position of party leader to become the party’s presidential candidate.
"I personally will welcome anyone who contests for leadership and I am encouraging it," Darboe said. "I am also encouraging them to look critically at the leaders and point out any deficiencies."
Darboe said he did not conduct any survey to gauge the opinion of the people to know his popularity, but added that he is enjoying a reasonable amount of support.
"I have genuine support in my party, unlike the ruling APRC leadership which does not have genuine support," he said
