Femi Peters' appeal case today africa » gambia Thursday, June 03, 2010 The appeal case of the imprisoned United Democratic Party (UDP), Campaign Manager, Femi Peters, is expected to be heard today at the High Court in Banjul. When contacted the counsel for Femi Peters, who also doubles as the UDP's Secretary-General and leader, lawyer Ousainou Darboe, confirmed the story and added that it will be heard today by 9.30 am. Mr. Peters, who is currently serving a one year imprisonment, is appealing against his conviction by the magistrates' court in Kanifing, presided over by magistrate Olajubutu Kayode for the offence of procession and use of a public address system without a permit, which is issued by the Inspector General of Police.

I predict the following points as likely grounds of appeal;
1. the magistrate has exceeded his powers when he delivered a sentence of one year. This offence normally carries a lesser sentence 2. the magistrate erred in law 3. procedural impropriaty
I shall be discussing the grounds after the hearing if they happen to be the ones on which the appeal is based
