'Coup' court battle rages;

The trial of Ethiopian opposition leaders and journalist’s accused of trying to overthrow the government after disputed elections in May 2005-resumed last week.
The prosecution made its submissions about how the accused planned to carry out their alleged plot against the state.

The 111 defendants – which include at least 54 officials of the country’s main opposition party, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), and 15 journalists – face charges of attempting to ‘overthrow the constitutional order through violence’ and ‘outrages against the constitution’. Other charges include high treason and attempted genocide, which are capital offences under Ethiopian law. Twenty-five individuals are being tried in absentia.

Despite renewed calls by Amnesty International for the release of the accused, the main prosecutor said the defendants were guilty of instigating unrest after parliamentary and municipal elections on May 15th 2005.

At least 84 people died, many at the hands of the police, when violence erupted in Ethiopia in June & November 2005 during opposition demonstrations to protest alleged poll fraud.

Africa is full of despots. Junkung has now learnt the ropes. They are a bunch of **** that have disgraced mankind. The stories are the same all over. No wonder africans are now called boat people being fed on by sharks in the atlantic.

DISBAND AU. It is interesting to know that head office of the Union is in Addis and yet have not raised a finger to denounce the inhumane treatments the ethiopian government is doing to its peolpe. The African commission in banjul is also equally guilty.

konds they are birds of the same feather. Look at Obersanjo upon whom we all hinged our hopes that he will attempt to rectify some of the rotten traditions in africa (perpectual rule), is seeking to contest for a third term.

No wonder he is so tight lip for fear of not being opposed by other African leaders for his attempts to perpectuate himself in government.

Nigeria Labour Congress restated its opposition to the third term bid of President Obasanjo and state governors.

Describing politicians as opportunists, the Congress also deplored the part played by some former public office holders, including former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Ogbeh, and former Inspectors-General of Police, in the abuse of workers and citizen’s rights.

‘Every public officer must surely drink from the cup with which he feeds others as soon as he steps down from office, it warned public officers in a speech by it President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, at the May Day, celebrations held in Abuja.

Federal legislators said they would stand firmly against an attempt to smuggle in a ‘doctored’ amendment bill into the House.
