A cry for help Africa » Gambia Thursday, April 29, 2010 Editor,
I am a Gambian citizen, and a wife to a Gambian businessman with three children, living and working in Sweden. My husband and I have been working in Europe so that we can invest back home and eventually return to our dear country. My husband had invested in a business in The Gambia and his half-brother was his agent. All the money invested has been squandered by this half-brother. A complaint was filed and the case was registered at the High Court since January 2006.
My husband has given his testimony and all necessary documents have been translated, submitted and tendered in court against the defendant since 2007. My husband has been travelling back and forth to The Gambia in pursuance of this case since 2006 and still there has not been any development or progress in this matter. Now the delay of the case at all times is my concern.
Some of the money used in this investment even include some of the savings of our children. It is very frustrating for Gambians living abroad to encounter such delay in justice and endless adjournments or lack of progress in cases all in the hope that one will abandon the case. I don't know where the problem is but I want to tell the authorities to help as we want to return home and contribute to the development of our country.
These are the feelings and emotions of a Gambian woman, a mother, and a worker appealing for help from the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs and all the female National Assembly members to help me. Thank you

I have seen a lot of this happen to people, some very close to me. many of the cases are never pursued in court, perhaps partly because money exchanged informally between relatives (in the Gambia)is hard to account for... |
