I am seeking three students (two technical and one functional) to work part-time on an IT project for a non-profit Gambian Web Project. Qualifications and requirements are:
1. Gambian Citizen and residing in Gambia (Banjul/Serrekunda area)
2. Female candidates have priority(Yes, it is a discrimination but positive one)
3. High School Graduate and attending a university or other post-secondary level training.
4. Excellent Computer Application Skills i.e. Email, Word, Excel, Access and Web Design.
5. Have a computer and internet connection at home.
6. Excellent English Communication Skills.
7. Between 18 to 26 years old
8. Disabled candidates have the priority
9. Those who have or whose family have economic difficulties have the priority.
Prefered Skills for technical role(s)
1. Computer Programming
Prefered Skills for functional role
1. Business Administration
Internship Description
1. Work from home
2. 20 hours per week
3. Work Hours
Monday 8pm to Midnight 4 hours
Tuesday 8pm to Midnight 4 hours
Friday 10pm to 2 am 4 hours
Saturday 10pm to 2am 4 hours
4 hours weekday work during flexible business hours.
4. 1100 Dalasi per month for functional role, 1100 dalasi for technical role, 1300 dalasi for technical lead role.
5. Work on Web Development project
6. Work will be done via IM. So high speed internet access with MSN/Skype/YM must be available
7. Webcam would be good.
8. This is a three months of internship.

Nice jobs Turk. I have a student (girl) from a very deprived family just finishing her diploma in Computer Science in GTTI. She would be good. Only problem - such a deprived family - no computer access at home; indeed - no electricity .....
I thik you'll find that those with computer and internet access at home might not be the ones with economic hardship.
But - good luck and good on you for doing this - I think it's brilliant. |

Have her contact me. In order to work on web project, one needs computer with internet access. She may be able to arrange something. I understand that those who have computer/internet home do not have the economic hardship, but in order to learn something and actually work on web development project, she needs access. She will get money, she could use money for the internet access.
If dedicated, she will be able to learn
- Understand web development
- learn client side web programming
- web administration
- web project management
much more than what she learnt in the school.

TURK, Great,I applaud you and your ideas,especialy the positive requirements,No 9 is really good, so few jobs available for disabled,I also think that you may have a great deal of trouble finding a student with high speed access at home,I am certain that other Bantaba readers would like to be kept up to date with your progress.
P.S.
Does the Gambian government have any business start up cash grants for deprived Gambians available    . |

Distance working or learning via internet is a good future for third world countries because there are no boundaries as long as one is online. You can be in Wassu - Gambia and working on a project with someone in Auckland - New Zealand just like we are all communicating here on Bantaba in Cyberspace.
Turk, this is a praiseworthy initiative and I wish you good luck. However, I doubt if you will reach the underprivileged Gambians because internet access at home in the Gambia is not that cheap. Moreover, one has to get a computer and constant electricity during your required working hours.
A few weeks ago, I saw a program on GRTS where Gamtel is said to have a new fiber optic link with Sonatel which in my opinion opens the chance for distance work in The Gambia in future as long as there is peace and stability. |

Momodou,I have seen the manholes and fibre optic cables that go with this project and although the cables are in Gambia the cables are not connected at each end,I understand that this cable will serve many counttries in Africa.

Well, i realize that having computer and internet is very tough requirement, but that is the only way with working collaboratively on a web project development. The hours are late as I will be in North American Time. I need constant internet access to work via IM/desktop sharing software to show/teach technical know-how. Also, I need to verify the work is being done. Web development require online search/online training as internet is largest knowledge base. Also, uploading/downloading work related files, manage the web site require internet connections/computer.
That is why I wanted to provide some cash payment that would help their internet connection. I have sent this to many organization but so far no genuine interests.
The person does not have to be underprivileged. I can have less satisfaction but still be happy to help some young person to have a career in IT. |

Turk, Well thought!
Please consider raising the remuneration package little up. Anyone with home computers on Internet in Gambia will pay at least three times the amount you currnely offer just to be online.
Your initiative is superb but looks not readily viable in the long wrong if that is the price tag.

They should see this as a learning opportunity. Not an employement. After graduation, I was with an organization working free for three months.
If I were IT student, I would ganged up with two other candidates and get one internet connection and share it. Or I would have talked to internet cafe and reserve time for specified period, or I would have talked to school lab to use their computer. Or, I would have talked to a neighbour. One needs to be little bid creative. I mean, if an IT student do not have internet/computer, this student made a wrong move to study. They should have choosen something else.
Do you know how much is the internet connection at home?

Turk,you cannot beat the Gambian system ,vast sums of money for things that most of the rest of the world's peoples can afford easily,now you can realise how frustrated a toubab feels when he or she tries to buy anything in The Gambia,you say thank you and walk away shaking your head in disbelief at what you have just been told.Development, progress for Gambian people ? Not yet I am afraid.
