That is what i have been saying. Gambia's economic realities too hard without overcoming that, you can't have a system. As I mentioned several times, gambia's problem is not Jammeh. The problem is socio-economic.
Look at the prices. Internet connection is more than the salaries. Electricity expensive. I mean, how can a computer student learn IT without computer and internet. How can other professionals i.e. lawyers, doctors or whoever get education for their field. Would you really trust a computer programmer for you business, or a nurse for your health without the lack of quality education.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

Turk, I am sure an internet café would not be a realistic opportunity. First, the connection is annoying slow . A friend of mine is there now pursuing web based studies. Last week, he told me, the connection was down each time he went to a café, so for a week nothing was done. As late as today he called me telling that three minutes before his paid time was out, he tried to save his work but could´n figure out what happend, and asked me to check. All his writing was lost. |

You are probably right kiwi. You see, talk is nothing. When I actually start doing something, I can see the realities of Gambia. Let me tell you little story.
When I was in Gambia a few years back, I lost my travelex cash passport and I needed money. I send email to my sister and ask her to send me some money and she did. She also scanned to western union receipt and email it to me. She could have just send me the number but she did not know better. Anyway, I attempted to open the file, download the file, while the connection was so slow. Guess what, the computer did not have Adobe pdf to open the attached western union receipt. LOL. |

I don´t know whether they have Adobe Reader nowadays but not all cafées have a printer, some have.
One way to solve the problem with documents is to have a @gmail adress on Google. While in your gmail there are several features, such as Documents. One can upload word ducuments, spreadsheets, photos, pdf-files and so on. When opening a pdf-documents it looks like no reader is needed – but I am not very sure about it.
Before travelling one could copy and upload all important documents such as travel documents, passport copy, insurance etcetera for easy access where ever you are. Give you password to someone trusted in case help is needed.
If both have Gmail, one can use ”Share document with…”.
Turk, keep trying to realize you project. I don´t think you meant it to be just talk…

Yes Jambo. That is the reason I wanted to offer my knowledge, skills and years of Comp.Eng. experiences. So, far other than a few banks, the IT situation in Gambia is still infant face. And I don't see any quick change for it. |

I am aware of Google hosted applications. My story was about Gambia's infant IT industry lack of even basic stuff.

You can also provide some internship opportunity for your site. You can have small projects for the IT students in Gambia and if they are successful with the application they code, you can host on your server.

Hi Turk I tried and tried to get in touch with my computer student but have had no luck! I still think your idea is a good one but everything on the ground there does make it difficult.
Jambo - GTTI does good computer courses with external validation making the qualification/s internationally recongnised. Some of the smaller, independent places offer straightforward courses but my expereince is that they are very varied in their quality, their teaching and their commitment to the students. (And they don't all have a regular supply of electricity!). One independent college near Churchills Town is Cinchips I would recommend this - I say this because one of my ex GTTI students is now working there as a lecturer and is 100% committed. |

Actually Turk - now I think about it - this guy (teaching at Cinchips) might be useful to you and any extra money or experience might be good for him.
Would you be interested? |
