Moves to silent societal catalysts.
Mr. Editor, Let all be said well, and let our society be cleansed from any dirt of anger, hatred and jealousy. I am not writing to defend Fatou, but defending the truth that will never die. Those of us who were not at the Observer then also have some things to say about Fatou Jaw Manneh after years of interaction in pro democracy activities.
Frankly, I am among the many journalistic students benefiting from the advices of this brilliant and unifying woman, in the name of Fatou Jaw Manneh. I cannot remember how many private mails I received from her, always in support of constructive criticism and cautioning us to focus on unity. In which ever way she entered the journalism profession, today, she is a brilliant writer, a national activist, and a standing woman of our generation.
It doesn’t come to me by surprise that there are many out there interested in silencing the voices of decent, and honestly they failed woefully. It is also evident that Fatou’s pro democracy activities will cost her sinister smears like the one observed in a widely read newspaper like “Freedom” today. That’s why I will caution my colleague, Pa Nderry to watch out for his incoming mails, though I am very well aware of his policy of no censorship. Certainly, the enemy is feeling the heat, as such will take to any desperate way of getting terror beyond the Gambian border. It will be ironical that our online voice that is out to root out terror will now harbor terror itself with the penetration of the enemy through the back gate..
Some of the interviews we ran with Fatou were read well and hailed by all peace loving Gambians, and it is certain that such strategy of political maturity and sensitivity is not by magic, could only come from someone well experienced in what she went through. Fatou is also an executive member of Save the Gambia Democracy Project, and the external wing of Gambia Press Union. She devoted a lot of her time and energy in these organizations, in a nutshell shows her stance in the ongoing redeeming of democracy in our motherland.
If societal catalysts like Deyda, Koro and Omar Barrow can be murdered in cold blood, where will the likes of Fatou Jaw Manneh, those far away from their hands’ reach, be safe in getting their images tarnished and falsely painted, just because of the exposure and good work they are daily engaged in to root out terror and seeing our society transformed to that of a true democratic society.
To Sister Fatou, I say keep it up. Keep up the good job, and let your open door remain for struggling writers.
