The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) http://www.achpr.org/, an organ set up under the provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights by the OAU in 1986, is head quartered in The Gambia.
The Secretariat of this regional human rights institution African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies ACDHRS was created in 1989 by a bill of The Gambian parliament with the vision to "promote in co-operation with other African and international institutions, the observance of human and peoples' rights and democratic principles throughout Africa". The ACDHRS (http://www.acdhrs.org/) is governed by an independent council of African jurists and other related experts.
Why are these vital institutions mute about the disappearences and human rights violations in The Gambia?
The only statement you find on the website of the The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) is: http://www.acdhrs.org/jointstatement.doc "Concerning the growing state of insecurity in the Gambia the The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) and the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, (IHRDA) have released a Communique, addressing the Issue. " This communique was probarbly issued in 2004 after the murder of Deyda Hydara.

These organisations are either conditioned by their sponsors, if they are not fincially independent, or they have a selective approach, for reasons better known to them, towards world problems. Their credibilities are at times doubtful.
The less one is dependent on others, the better one operates. |

| Bamba, Thanks for the reply. One would expect these institutions to be in the forefront of checking and taking up issues of human rights violations in The Gambia but I can’t see what they are doing. People are reported missing and others detained beyond 72 hours without being charged all these past years and you never see any reactions from ACHPR. I wish they could make more noise than they are currently doing. |

And no-one should make the mistake that such organisations dont know what's going on in gambia right now, u bet they know. They do have their informatiom channels and gambians surely utilize such channels to inform them.
I see these organisation like NGOs etc, etc, as neo-colonalist structures modernized to perpetuate oppression and all that goes with it. |

The Commission is a political organisation funded by African governmenets and as such do not have the independence they need. It is just a window dessing. They have not raised a finger regarding atrocoties in the Gambia. I dont give them any thought anyway.
It is another way of African Governments trying to police themselves through the comission. Appointments ahve a political dimension. |

| So African gonvernments set up their own commissions to monitor them. No wonder they are being monitored properly. |
