I have commence slowly comparing the cultural advocacy of Jaliba Kuyateh and Foday Musa Suso. They are both from deep mandingo traditional griout families. Both are well educacted in term of secular and traditional heritage. Foday Musa is more widely known and predictabily much richer. But has he sacrifice the Gambian masses for world wide fame and aclaim, whilst our Jaliba stayed with us and slog it with his patrons?
I spoke with F.M Suso, he aslo like Jaliba is very friendly and can talk at lenght on many issues. Comparing their music will be difficult, but since both sing in Mandinka, there should be a way to tackle them. F.M Suso regularly play along side big stars in the west, regardless his music mimic deep mandingo folklure tradition. His Mba muso, sundiajatta, domoriwo, Joker and many more are classic deep mandingo country music. Suggestions welcome.
