Just before Christmas, research a team from University of Copenhagen presented a report to a governmental committee of civil servants in which it was stated that the number of women wearing burkas in Denmark can be counted on one hand. The following is an editorial from one of the leading daily newspapers.
-------------------
Politiken EDITORIAL: Stop the non-existent ’Burka problem’ 13. jan 2010
There are only 3-4 women in Denmark who cover themselves completely. You have to be very lucky to find a burka-clad woman in Denmark.
There are at most three or four women in Denmark who daily don the top-to-toe dress code, a fact confirmed by a report the government itself commissioned from Copenhagen University and which has now been leaked to the press.
So if anyone thinks they see lots of burkas in the streets, these must either be commandos under training or journalists trying what it feels like. Or – they’re dreaming.
There is quite simply no ‘burka problem’ in Denmark. Nonetheless, after the neo-Conservative Naser Khader raised the issue, ‘the problem’ has preoccupied the political agenda to such an extent that one would have thought that the nation was besieged.
Today, the government’s so-called powerful Coordination Committee is to meet to determine how to resolve this non-existent problem.
There is, of course, a moderate type of burka called the niqab which is less shrouded – allowing the eyes free rein. That means it’s easier to avoid bumping into anything.
There are somewhere in the region of 150 and 200 women in Denmark who wear the niqab. But: of these between 60 and 80 are Danish converts. Islam is no different from any other religion. Those who come in last, are strongest in their faith and expression.
Introducing a burka problem Both the burka and the niqab are highly constricting in ways that are more inconvenient than high heels or skin-tight jeans as they are symbols of a patriarchal culture and a male dominated sexual priggishness that runs contrary to modern human attitudes.
There is absolutely no reason to further the fundamental use of the burka or niqab in the country.
But the surest way to introduce the burka and spread the use of the niqab, is to discover them as a problem. They then become symbols of all sorts of other things, rather than that of the oppression of women. They become expressions of protest and defiance against a Danish society that cannot establish how to safeguard its minorities, and which becomes deadlocked when something is different.
Six months of a burka debate, in a country without burkas, has now culminated with mighty expressions from the government and action to resolve a problem that does not exist.
Instructions for public authorities and working places will be developed – and everyone – from bus drivers to social workers – will know what they have to do if one of the three – perhaps four – burka clad women should turn up in the bus or at the office.
As a result, we can be sure that Denmark will develop a burka problem. More shrouded women will emerge. And many of them will be Danish converts.

So what does it tell you? It is provocation to me. I feel like politicians want Muslims to be marginalized/radicalized. Let me give you an example from Turkey.
Mid 90s, when I was at a universtity in Istanbul, it was very rare you would see the students with hijab. There was no hijab issue. When, nationalist-left started opposition about wearing hijab in public space i.e. University campuse, eventually, hijab were banned. That was the turning point for conservatism in Turkey, specifically, Islamic dress code became so popular within youth. Now, there is a ban in public universities and lots of young girl not able to go university. Now they became so passionate about their fight for Islamic dress code. So what has changed last 20 years?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

Daily paper Information has come into possession of the report that the team handed over to Interior and Social ministeries in November.
The three burqa dressed women that Danish and international press reported about during the week is not mentioned anywhere in the research. Several of researchers behind the report are surprised at where information about the three burqa women comes from, because it's not from their investigation. But because of a confidence clause none of the 14 researchers are allowed to comment on the investigation, as long as the report isn't published.
Politicians are surprised over that researchers haven't found any burqa women. But that doesn't get them to change their point of view to the burqa question. |
