Seven days into my month-long stay in the Gambia and $3,000 spent already. Yes, $3,000. Things are really expensive in The Gambia. The way things are going, I may not have enough money to purchase a ram during Tobaski. :-)

On the positive side, I'm delighted spending some time with my parents as well as praying five times daily at our local Masjid.

On a separate topic, I would like to seize this opportunity to pray for all of this year's Hujjaj's to Makkah...May Allah accept all of their prayers and reunite them safely with their families upon their return. Also, I would like to wish every muslim a blessed Eid-UL Fitr. May we live to withness many more Eids in good health and happiness. May Allah's guidance be with the Ummah.

Brother ameen for the prayers. I wish i could have been on the ground to celebrate at home. But for a longtime i have to spend it abroad. Hope to be spending it at home in the near future, inshallah.

The rate at which you are spending is incredible. Are you courting(looking for wife) joking!!!!

But have to be mindful of the fake requests by some family and friends. Because you are from overseas some think you are loaded to the brim. Have a happy eid and enjoyable stay.

Thank you, may Allah SWT accept your prayers. I wish you and all muslims a happy Eid-Ul adha (Tobaski) in advance.

Thanks Madiba and Momodou. Indeed, there is no place like home. For me, spending quality time with my parents is priceless; even though they were just in the states during the summer.

As for my spending at a rapid rate, it seems like everyone here has three problems in common: A need for a new mobile; building materials to upgrade their homes and money for a ram.

Hi Lily, i was told it'll be next week Saturday - 28 November. Are you going there?

Lily, It is reported at Point Online; "The President of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC), Alhagie Mahamadou Lamin Touray has said that by the grace of Allah, Tobaski will be observed on Friday 27th November 2009."

Thank you friends. No - not going this Tobaski but will be going at Christmas time and one of my closest families has already invited me to their compound for my Christmas lunch. I shared Tobaski with them last year and they will share Christmas with me this year. How great is that?!

there was a buying frenzy when I was leaving, people getting ready to buy the rams, rice and new clothes. Once the date is announced people get ready to celebrate.
