Young Writers Need Encouragement By Pa Musa Badgie
In an interview with the Daily News shortly after the lectures, Mr. Lamin Jarju, an English Lecturer at the College said young writers in the country need encouragement as English students in the college are suppose to study literature as a component of English language requirement.
As part of their strive to encourage young literary writers in the Gambia, the English Department at Gambia College in collaboration with the Literature lecturers of the University of the Gambia organized a three-hour open lectures on Gambian literature for English specialists in the college.
Mr. Jarju, who coordinated the session, said Literature deals with the people’s life and Gambian literature is not an exception. According to him, their objective is to expose their students to literary domains as far as Gambian literature is concerned. The lecturers created an opportunity for the students to know about the way to publish their literary works through the Ndanan Magazine and other publications.
Ndanan magazine he said, was existing in the early independence years here in the Gambia, basically used as an avenue to publish Gambian literary works. The new Ndanan which was established recently is the revitalization of the old Ndanan and will avail the young and other writers opportunities to publish their works. He took the opportunity to encourage the upcoming writers to emulate the work of Ebou Dibba Sillah, Lenrie Peters and others whose works were appreciated and made history with regards to Gambian literature.
Mr. Jarju revealed that the open lectures was organized to broaden the perspectives of English specialist classes – both students of year one and two – on Gambian literature, which he said, has a history dating back to pre-independence and post-independence to date. He noted that the lectures as the two guest speakers – Dr. Pierre Gomez and Cherno Omar Barry who both studied literature and now lecturing at the University of the Gambia had established themselves well in the domain by doing thorough research on Gambian literary writers.
In his opening remarks earlier, the Registrar at the College Mr. Demba Ceesay who spoke on behalf of the Principal defined Literature deals with the ways of life of people’s expression either in words or orally. He explained that the Open Day lecture was organized to broaden the minds of the English students especially for those who want to venture into writing, to the outside world.
He expressed optimism that knowledge from the lectures would be put into good use, while assuring students that the lecturers will deliver to expectations. He noted that their capacities could be elevated with regards to Gambian literature.
Participants who spoke to the Daily News expressed their views with satisfaction and maintained that they would live up to expectations as they learnt about the emergence of the Gambian literature and what led to the establishment and failure of the former Ndanan.

| Isn't there a window to articulate ideas in mandingo, Fulbe, Wolof and the rest of the Gambian languages? I find Gambians to be good with English but the time ripe for diversification into our main stream core languages. |

Yea I concur with you Santafars on the utilage of indigenous languages however I'd go a step further to use both indigenous languages with European languages for a wider readership alias my friend time has moved on. I feel the time is to bridge the lingual gap to sustain progressive concepts.
