NYC – A Non Partisan Body By Alieu
The Executive Secretary of the National Youth Council Marchel Mendy has said that the Council is an autonomous and non partisan body with the aims and objectives of allowing for the representation of the interest of all young men and women irrespective of their ethnic, political or religious affiliation.
Mr. Mendy made this remarks at the third Annual Youth Empowerment Forum organized by Saamasang Youth and Children Federation at the Women’s Federation Nursery School in Brikama. He noted that in order to enable it work effectively towards the goals of empowering young Gambian men and women, the council shall establish technical committees selected among its members to facilitate, initiate, review and monitor the youth programmes in specific castors.
A Youth Council according to the NYC boss can vary in each area depending on whether or not it has support workers, the constitution of the group, he number of members, the age range of members and how it works with the council and other organizations. Essentially, however, they are groups that put forward the views of young people in the local area, getting involved in campaigns to bring about change. Typical examples of things a Youth Council may want to achieve could include getting reduced transport fares for students, having more sports provision on offer, or making schools implement strategies to tackle bullying. Promotion of youth organizations and youth participation, youth policy and youth rights, government lobbying and public awareness of youth issues.
He further said the theme of the forum is prudent to note as the NYC has responsibility to sensitize youth on the opportunities available in the country and to encourage them to take up skills acquisition with all seriousness. By extension, the NYC will endeavor to encourage government to implement policies that are youth friendly and to put in place structures that will help to engage the youth in some meaningful adventures.
The National Youth Council according to Mendy, was established by an Act of Parliament and as such has various mandates among them is to organize and coordinate youth programmes, policies and provide guideline for the orientation of youth organizations with the view to harmonizing various youth operations in The Gambia emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the NYC to conduct research on youth development, monitor the implementation of National Youth Policies of Government and decisions of the National Youth Policy on resources for youth development.
