Activist Urges Youth Participation in Nation Building By Sylvester Jawo
Mr. Alhagie Jallow, the Public Relation Officer of the Youth Association of Basse (YAB) have made a passionate appeal to youths of the Gambia in general and those in Basse in particular to massively participate in national development activities that will benefit all and sundry.
In a chat with The Daily News recently at the Nasir Ahmadiya Senior Secondary School in Basse, Mr. Jallow condemned the lazy lifestyles that some youth are living which he said is neither in their interest nor that of the nation. Jallow noted that the youths, being the cream of every society, should have been the most hardworking class in our communities.
According to him, the story is not what obtains in society today as youths are now obsessed with leaving for what they termed “greener pastures”, while many others also choose to stay all-day-long without doing any meaningful venture or wok, to earn them a decent living. He also frowned at those who embark on illegal migration “leaving our smiling coast, only to be jailed or killed in high seas or deserts”. He described the act as a very disturbing phenomenon that can only be addressed by the youths themselves.
Jallow calls for a stop to the issue of illegal migration, saying there is no place like home. He compared such dreams among those youths that see future as “bleak”, motivating them to “go away from home wandering like a Fulani cow for greener pastures”. He said that the youth association of Basse is doing all it can to sensitize the youths in order to be good and responsible citizens, who will not be liabilities but assets to our motherland.
He finally appealed for support from government, philanthropists, NGOs and individuals to the Basse youth association. According to him, they have a lot of programmes to implement, which he said, requires resources.
