Observer goes countrywide coverage: Reporters now deployed to all provincial regions
30 October 2009 The Observer Company, publisher of the Daily Observer newspaper will go on countrywide coverage effective next week, as five reporters are now deployed as provincial correspondents in all the regions of the country.
This is of course a landmark development in the history of the company, whose main target is to inform, educate and entertain the Gambian populace in particular and the world at large about developments in the country. The formal farewell cremony was held yesterday at the Observer offices in Kanifing for the reporters namely, Sheriff Barry who will be reporting from the Upper River Region, Salifu M Touray who will be reporting from Lower River Region and Modou Kanteh who will be reporting from the Fonis in the Western Region was done at the Observer complex along Gacem Road in Kanifing alongside the two stationed correspondents in the Central River and North Bank Regions namely Lamin SM Jawo and Alhagie Babou Jallow respectively.
Speaking at the farewell ceremony yesterday, Pa Malick Faye, managing director of the Observer Company, described the move as a major development in the history of the company. The move, he said is done because Observer is here to report accurately and give the best to its readers. MD Faye however told the departing journalists that deploying them to the provinces was not base on any form of discrimination, saying? it will be a routine process?.
The Observer boss reminded the reporters to maintain the editorial policy of the company while at their various posting regions and also urged them to keep the good reputation of the company. According to Faye, to excel in life is no magic but it is only achieved through ones commitment and dedication to duty. He reminded them that they are still part and parcel of the company and promised them that the company will continue to take care of their welfare at all times like any other staff member. ?The purpose of the Daily Observer newspaper is to cover developments in the whole country. So you don?t need to worry, we will defend you to the letter?,he vowed but quickly urged them to report accurately and responsibly.
In a word of advice MD Faye reminded the reporters to bear in their minds that anything they do while at their various places, will reflect on the company, urging them that they must work hard and be ambassadors of the company and to refrain themselves from any act outside the tenets of journalism. He also urged them to always maintain honesty and respect with the community they will be residing in .
The Observer boss then implored on the reporters to endeavour to give factual and balance reporting in the interest of the state and reassured them of his managements support at all times.
Lamin M. Dibba, marketing manager of the Observer Company said in journalism, one must always be sure of what he reports. Being a career journalist himself, Dibba implored on the reporters to always ask questions on issues they are not sure of so as to give a balance reporting. The credibility of Observer in The Gambia, he went on, is high, ranking the top among all media houses in the country. Like in the words of MD Faye, Dibba equally urged the reporters to maintain the good name of the company and to closely work with the people they will be meeting with.
Alhagie Jobe, one of the deputy editors-in-chief also urged the reporters to endeavour to give accurate reporting from their various posting places. He advised them to stick to the editorial policy of the paper and report accurately to avoid diverting from the ethics of the profession. Jobe tasked them to deliver as expected as their potentials cannot be disputed. He also urged them to always try to portray the good image of the paper and to further concretise the credential the paper has already established in the country. He also implored on the departing reporters to show maximum discipline and honesty during the execution of their duties.
Assan Sallah, an editor, also urged the departing reporters to maintain the company?s good name. According to Sallah, in as much as the Daily Observer is working to inform, educate and entertain the people , it is worthwhile to have a countrywide coverage. Sallah called on the reporters to double up their efforts and maintain their credibility while in the provinces. He also called on them to always endeavour to write factual reports and adhere to the editorial policies of the paper.
Yassin Faal-Njie, the accountant of the company also assured them of management?s continous support and urged them to deliver as expected. Sheriff Barry, on behalf of his colleagues delivered the vote of thanks. At the end of the ceremony, managing director Faye handed over reporting equipment such as micro-tape recorders, cassettes, batteries and notebooks to the reporters to enhance their work.
