Justice Moses Richards of the special criminal court in Banjul has cautioned two accused persons, who are on trial for robbery, not to waste their youth.

The presiding judge had observed the demeanour of the 2nd accused, Bai Morr Nyang, as he was walking towards the dock and had asked whther the accused was ill. Nyang then told the judge that he was attacked recently by an assailant in Kololi, who had threatened him saying if he (Nyang) doesn#146;t mind he will not go back to Europe. The accused then showed the presiding judge the injuries he sustained and said he had taken some medication that morning without taking any food.

Justice Richards then pointed at some of the Gambia senior secondary school pupils in the court and said children are moving fast nowadays and anyone who fails to move along will eventually become a dropout. The judge then went on to deliver a lecture about life and urged the youths not to waste the opportunities that they have.

He cited the case of one Gibril King, whom he had discharged recently because of lack of evidence from the prosecution and revealed that he has learnt that he had been rearrested by the police. Justice Richards then asked the accused whether he had contacted his counsel, Badou S Conteh, who was absent in court and was said to have gone to the magistrates court. The judge then remarked that for a lawyer to leave the high court and go to a magistrates court is contempt.
