Culled from Foroyaa Online ----------- President Jammeh’s Cancelled Trip to France The Rumours and the Facts By Abdoulie G. Dibba
On Monday 5th October 2009, it was announced over the National Media that President Jammeh would depart for France to attend a UNESCO meeting. On Tuesday 6 th October 2009, the road to the airport was kept traffic free to enable the long convoy of the President to take him to the airport.
Information reaching this paper has it that the president did arrive at the Banjul International Airport on Tuesday 6 October, that morning and did board the Aircraft with his entourage. The pilot started the engine and smoke was emitted from the exhaust pipe. However before the aircraft took off the president and delegates decided to disembark form the aircraft and cancelled their trip. Rumours are rife that the aircraft caught fire. Our investigation reveals that there was no fire alarm and the fire fighters were not put on any special alert. The aircraft is not seen to be undergoing any exceptional repairs. What happened that day is reported to be normal for any trip. Observers did not notice any sense of panic because of any perceived danger. Heads also did not roll at the airport for alleged failure to perform any duty.
Editor’s note Foroyaa is still unable to establish why the President cancelled his trip in such an unceremonious manner. The public is owed an explanation. We have contacted the Director of Press and Public Relations at the office of the President to indicate the need for clarification of such matters which are in the public domain. We started with the reaction on the Statements of the UN and AU rapporteurs and would have followed with the cancellation of the trip. Unfortunately, we are yet to get any positive feedback from such quarters. Without freedom to access to information the Press should not be reprimanded for publishing rumours. Facts could only come from those who are privy to them.
