UDP Campaign Manager Appologizes to President Jammeh
Harangues Inspector General of Police

By Saikou Ceesay

Mr. Femi Peters, Campaign Manager of the United Democratic Party (UDP) apologized to President Jammeh for the language he used during his recent interview with the BBC’s Network Africa.

Coming against the backdrop of controversies stirred out of the airing of the interview on the BBC medium, Femi Peters apologizes to friends, sympathizers, well wishers and supporters of the UDP for the language he used in expressing his thoughts on issues of shared concern to the country.

Femi Peters extended his apology to his party leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and his political mentor, Assan Musa Camara. In an interview with this reporter, Mr. Peters said he strongly believes that his party can do better than what the Jammeh administration is doing interms of current governance challenges facing the country.

The UDP Campaign Manager has also harangued the Inspector General of Police Essa Badjie for what he said was the IGP’s denial of their party permit to hold public meetings for what he said was no good or justifiable reasons. He said their application to hold meetings in Kiang, Jarra, Upper Fulladou West and Bakau among other places were turned down by the Inspector General of Police Essa Badjie. He said that not a single of these above named proposed meetings were responded to.

According to him the Inspector General of Police did not have the administrative decency to reply to their letters and giving reasons for disapproval. He said the IGP holds the approval of their meetings as something personal which he described as wrong.

Peters recalled that sometime ago, he sent a letter from the Saint Mary’s Cathedral informing the IGP about the Good Friday procession of witnesses and also informed him that the Saint Mary’s Cathedral is hosting procession of witnesses on Good Friday 2009. He said it is rather unfortunate that the letter sent to the IGP was never responded to.

“I took the trouble to go to the police on that Good Friday afternoon to discover to my utter surprise that the Traffic Division of the Police had never been informed of the procession of witnesses to be hosted by Saint Mary’s Cathedral on that Good Friday. It is unfortunate that the IGP, out of ignorance has been disrespectful to the norms and standards of democracy, good governance and constitutionality,” he said, adding that it is the UDP’s constitutional right to hold meetings as a political party anywhere in the country on less circumstance, except what he termed a “force majeure” rules otherwise.

He said it is pertinent to note that the IGP has failed to learn from the experience of his predecessors, adding that he should be enlightened that the UDP went to court and the case was ruled in favor of UDP, which gave them the constitutional right to hold meetings.

The UDP campaign manager asserted that the UDP will not help the IGP to set this country ablaze but will uphold their constitutional right to hold meetings. Peters said UDP is a registered political party and the leading opposition party. He said for that reason, they would continue to be an opposition until democracy, good governance, respect for human rights and the rule of law are respected.

He advised the IGP to be cognizant of this indisputable fact and be guided accordingly.
