This is an interesting development. Lets hope that the proposed projects specially the direct landing point of the submerged fibre cable along the Africa Coast to Europe gets fully implemented.

Gamtel, which was once only second to South Africa in terms of telecommunications is an example of a failed public institution due to the unprofessional interferance of the A(F)PRC.

Gamtel on Reincarnation of Lost Glory - VP Njie-Saidy
Hatab Fadera

11 September 2009

The vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Her Excellency, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, has informed members of the National Assembly that the new management of The Gambia Telecommunication Company (GAMTEL), is embarking on the reincarnation of the company's lost glory as one time highly giant of Africa in terms of tele-density and technological innovation.

The vice president was responding to a question raised by the National Assembly member for Kiang Central, Hon. Babanding KK Daffeh on behalf of the minority leader and NAM for Kiang West, as to what the Ministry of Communication, Information and Information Technology and the company itself is doing to restore the lost glory.

Dr Njie-Saidy told the members that the process of restoring the lost glory is done through rehabilitation, upgrading and modernisation of Gamtel's obsolete infrastructure to be replaced by new and latest state-of-the earth technologies. To overhaul the national telecommunication infrastructure, according to her, a series of projects are currently being implemented. Such projects, she said included the rehabilitation of the fixed line network, which she said has started in the Greater Banjul Area, and would continue in the rural areas, as well as replacement of the switches with the Next Generation Network (NGN).

According to her, the replacement of the transmission network, the CDMA (Jamano) network expansion project, and the Tunisian Advanced Wireless Access (TAWA) network expansion are among other projects being implemented. In addition to the aforementioned projects, Vice President Njie-Saidy further revealed that some major projects are also being pursued. "Gamtel in collaboration with SONATEL of Senegal is executing the Cross Gambia Project. This project will connect the Dakar fibre link from Karang to Barra, via Banjul, Serrekunda, Brikama and major settlements along the route to Seletti," she said.

She added that the project will provide direct access to Senegal and reduce cost of calls between the two countries. Moreover, she added that this will serve as a back up for the national backbone thereby reduce significantly service disruptions due to fibre cuts, amongst others. "To further improve our national access and service delivery countrywide, a transmission network with the use of fibre is being planned for the North Bank. This will link Banjul and Basse through North Bank thus providing reliable flow for the rural and international traffics up to Basse. This she said, will make communication more accessible, available and affordable with good quality," indicated Dr Njie-Saidy.

She then noted that through Gamtel's continued determination to attain its past glory, the institution has decided to invest in the IP-MPLS to improve and consolidate its network quality, outreach and flexibility. The IP-MPLS, she said, will enhance the switching capacity and provide the platform for bundled and better managed products and services. As a long term solution, Dr Njie-Saidy told the country's lawmakers that Gamtel in collaboration with the government, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Africa Coast to Europe submarine consortium in a bid to acquire Gambia's own landing point and direct international access to the outside world.

"Meanwhile, negotiations and consultations are ongoing in order to realize this project. The landing point will provide better quality, a more secure and high capacity network for both data and voice services. The project will also provide the infrastructure for television services and other multimedia functions," revealed Dr Njie-Saidy. The realization of the assertions above, she assured, will undoubtedly restore Gamtel's lost glory. However, she noted that the spirit of team work between Gamtel management and government must continue to be nurtured, thus, help Gamtel regain its position of being one of the leading telecommunication companies in Africa.

An excellent piece of news, if it ever gets off the ground,I have to tell members that at the moment Gamtel is a very poor example of what a good telecommunications company should be, for over a fortnight Gamtel ( Gamcell the mobile arm) has been suffering from very poor signal strength due I hear to damage caused by recent heavy rains to its hardware,Gamtel staff were unable to say when the signal strength will return to normal, customer care calls were left unanswered and the problems still persist, so much so that Many people have changed to alternative providers Comium being in the forefront. The financial and customer losses of Gamcell must be considerable at this time.Renovation must show itself very soon.
