Celebration at Gainako; 3 years
Dear readers & Contributors,
We thank God Almighty that another day called “birthday” has hatched September 12th 2009, and this time three years of existence in our holy month of fasting, flying time hardly noticeable. We extend celebration of Gainako to you all and it is fair we do this after all these years of interactions at forum level. It has been three years already…though an odd number, but we will break the myth. I am personally proud to associate with you all. I am proud of my associates at Gainako, especially Baldeh, Solo and Lamma. I remain the little passenger in their vehicle and I will board in as long as the journey takes. Celebration in my definition is a measure of progress. It means reflecting on one’s successes and failures and ways to improve for the better. Instead of yearning for rains of praises, people are encouraged to discuss what is at stake. No doubt, words of encouragement activate hope and love, and renews the very struggle at hand, but what is at stake takes precedence. We therefore call on each and everyone to participate in honor of Gainako’s celebration and that of the greater struggle at large, and it doesn’t matter to us what outlet you do it at, just yearn for a readership that will get the message out. We stationed ourselves in these forums not because we lack readership where we are, but to improve on sociable grounds and interactions, since no man can ever be an island. We do not compete in news or articles but we jealously safeguard integrity, spirit of sharing and professionalism as students. We do this not seeking names or any special recognition, but because we should. It is everyone’s duty to champion freedom, equality and justice in a manner acceptable. Therefore don’t fold your hands because your little input greatly counts. As humans, it is normal to be just humans.
Already, we ran Binneh, DA, Galleh, Kanteh and a lot more is lined up for us all. It is certain that these patriots didn’t write these pieces only to merely celebrate with Gainako, but to stir intellectual debates and educate those of us who will ever remain students of the diverse world. Therefore, feel free to discuss with them and encourage them by sending them valuable feedback. On behalf of my humble self, and our entire editorial team, we say thank you all for participating and for wholeheartedly tolerating our existence. I wish you all a happy Ramadan and celebration. Love you all so very much!
In the end, we celebrate with you all, and we pray for the sick and the suffering to heal; the tamed and oppressed to be free; the captives to be free; the poor and hungry to be sufficed; the dictators to change for good leadership; and the uneducated to be knowledgeable, so help us God!
In God’s name and that of our motto, “Guardianship & Independence” we wish you all the best.
Sincerely, YJ
Few quotes:
http://www.gainako.com/news/
quote: [Gainako clocks three at a time of enormous challenges in our nation’s history. Gambia is at a defining moment confronted with the most gruesome political, social and governing issues we have ever faced as a people. Democracy, freedom of expression, rule of law and citizens’ individual rights and liberty are under serious assault under the current APRC administration.] Demba Baldeh
quote: [Now the question is whether the military is prepared and capable of cleaning the mess it has so shamefully created. In answering this question one need to look at the present composition of the military demographically and ideologically. But would a pascifist agree in the first place as to whether there is a role for the military in this all important task of getting rid of the present system that tend to be, like Sheaksphare would put it, „a Colossus that bestride the world“?]Kanteh
quote: [In this era of political intolerance and repression in our country, the Gambian media is challenged to dare to explore the legitimacy of the actions of established authority and its norms and policies, and where these are found wanting in decency or fair play, to help our society make up its own mind to reject them. The Gambian media is challenged to help us build ideal citizens who will value their freedom to hold and express contrary opinions, who will dare the powers that be to prevent them from doing so, and who will assert sovereign control over their bodies and minds and exercise their legitimate and just rights as long as others are not needlessly and unjustly harmed in the process.]Baba Galleh Jallow
quote: [The first category is the independent newspapers which continue to adhere to this traditional role, albeit with quite a lot of difficulties and also at great risk to both their facilities and operators. Apart from the fact that hardly anyone in government now dares to talk to journalists, we have also for instance seen the numerous arson attacks in the past few years on both their facilities and on the residences of some media practitioners, the perpetrators which heinous crimes have never been punished. We have also witnessed the frequent arrests and harassment of journalists, culminating in the assassination of Deyda Hydara and the disappearance of Chief Ebrima Manneh, both of which cases have never been investigated. There was also the recent mock trial and imprisonment of six journalists for merely reacting to comments made by President Jammeh on the still unresolved killing of Deyda Hydara.]Demba Ali Jawo
quote: [Responding to the aforementioned questions requires an understanding of how world cultures and religion contributed to the peaceful transformation of societies and communities from time immemorial. From ancient civilization, the embodiment of repentance and forgiveness as tools of development has brought to light considerable success across all spheres of societal transformation - socio-politic and socio-economic transformation. This is so because of our tolerance in disengaging ourselves from past stories. In a religious teaching at a Boston Chapel on September 5th, 2005 a contemporary scholar of modern Christian Studies once argued that: “Our primal identity is our relation to God in our own context, and that relation to God includes relating to other people as also first related to God in their context, and only secondarily as interacting with us in our context. Our fundamental relation to other people should be to treat them as living and dying to God, whose children they are.]Binneh S Minteh

More quotes from http://www.gainako.com/news/
quote: [Do Gambians really want the involvement of religious leaders in reconciling people? On face of it, the answer is not straight forward. Just as many of us pick and choose which religious laws to follow and which one to violate, our views of religious leaders is thus base on our perception of religion in general. For us to accept the mediation of Imams and Priest in future or in existing conflicts, they must win our trust first. And with our strong secular outlook, the judgement we have of the Imams and priest will be through the same secular looking glass. Are the Imams and Priest condemning repressive acts by the state for instance, are they matching with people against heavy fines on the media, do they understand the everyday suffering of the masses?]Suntou Bolongba Touray
quote: [Media practitioners have challenges from diverse stakeholders. Due to popular participation stimulated by a curious mass audience, media practitioners need to engage in frequent review of content and context of what they publish. Small difference can bear great impact, positive or some times adversely. It is not enough to set targets. Times are changing.Tastes vary and stay changing. In that respect, practitioners are required by these complex shifts to meet changing perceptions and conditions.]Sarjo Bayang

Bro Kayjatta, Uncle Suntou et al,
Equally accept my appreciation of your noted educational threads here. That said a lot more is lined up. We will be hearing from the politicians, the legal minds, heads of organizations, the women and etc…We know some are caught up with Ramadan….but we encourage everyone to strife hard to engage the people in simple and logical dialogue. This struggle of ours cannot be all about Jammeh. I do not know about others but I am tired of mentioning his name one bit. Our goal as far as I am concerned should be for the long term. Those that are interested in political positions should tighten their belts and use the ongoing situation as a learning curve. While we appreciate all the felicitations in open and private, it is our preference that we congratulate and felicitate those that whole-heartedly are contributors. The celebration continues at Gainako…..we appreciate your patience and understanding while we get it all out for the readers. Meanwhile happy celebration and we thank you all for celebrating with us this year. It is going to be an interactive celebration this year.
Happy feast of Ramadan in advance to all…

http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2009/09/14/the-role-of-gambia’s-educational-and-health-institutions-in-enhancing-better-education-and-health-for-all-2.html
quote: In the Gambia, children under the age of 15 account for roughly 45 percent of the country's population. With a school going age population of nearly 50%, the Gambia’s education system must be ready for a huge task of imparting knowledge. However while the education institutions prepare for the huge task, it is the role of the health institutions to nurture the health of the people who will sit in the classrooms. From the very day that a child is born to the time that he/she enters the classroom, to the time that he/she goes to the grave, the health institution has the role of maintaining good health for the individual. One very important role of the health institutions is in the area of disease prevention. With infant mortality of about 84 per thousand, 60% of which is caused by malaria, implementing preventive methods such as massive provision of mosquito nets, proper drainage system, etc. would go a long way in alleviating this problem. Again, the healthcare sector of the country would need the collaboration of the educational institutions in both the research and dissemination of information to the Gambian populace. The tertiary educational institutions, especially the University of Gambia, can play a vital role in researching not only the best treatment that the people need but in coming up with better preventive mechanisms that can be employed to avoid killer diseases such as malaria. Such mechanisms may include the kinds of tools and media that are more effective in educating the masses.Mamburay

Compatriots,
Today, we dine with GMC’s party head Barrister Mai Fatty and UDP’s surrogate Saihou Mballow. I thought we haven’t come to the congratulatory part yet. Lawyer Darboe’s interview has been republished afresh to give a chance to those that missed it. Compatriots, the celebration is not over yet…a lot is in the pipeline and stay tuned…
Happy feast of fitr in advance to all Muslims. Amen.
Anniversary quotes: http://www.gainako.com/news/
quote:
“Today, Gambians need accurate news more than ever because President Jammeh's tyrannical regime has decided to do what it does best; twists facts, issues bogus charges, subterfuge and oppress the people. The million dollar question is what can Gambians do to get out of this mess without violent and rebellion? How can the nation speak with one voice of unity, understand that freedom is only possible after Jammeh; people can only live without fear, intimidation and harassment when Jammeh is out of the way then and only then we can make Gambia conducive for genuine democracy and rule of law.” Saihou Mballow
quote: “The service you continue to offer our country and peoples is impressive. I am very proud to join our general membership and friends and like-minded Gambians in thanking you for all that you are doing for our country and humanity. I crave your indulgence to keep up the wonderful job!” Barrister Mai Fatty, GMC.
quote:
“Darboe: Our priority would be to restore the lost image of the country… to restore Gambians’ lost rights, their authority to determine and direct the affairs of the country… within those priorities fall energizing the economy. No economy can be energized and made for the benefit of the people if the people with the technical knowledge and skills are not in charge to direct the economic policy of the country. Every sector of government should be depended on the sound policies of the government and these policies should be directed by the people with the expertise. Within the first 90 days of a UDP government, we will set up a constitutional review committee that will look at the constitution and make sure that the constitution would adhere to the course of democracy and rule of law. It should also contain strict regulations to help guide sound economic developments in the Gambia. A provision will be provided to make sure that those in charge of government are only in charge of government and are held accountable for their actions and that of their departments.” Lawyer Darboe, UDP

Justice for all!
Dear all,
Happy eid-ul fitr (Koriteh) in advance!
I tell you what: LJD's piece is another eye-opener, and his special reference of the "federalist" is a must-know portion, if and only if Gambians are measuring upto America (land of the free). I personally think every paragraph of this piece is worth world-wide circulation. Trust me, Karim, YJ, etc...are not the only beneficiaries, because the professor as our learned friend would honor him in this piece, has lately been quoting from the online outlets. It tells you he is reading with his flapping ears wide open.
I once again thank all participants, most recently LJD for being there (available) for the younger ones....that when we knock on his door, he will always answer, even though pressing time is against him. I think the truth be told, such commentaries truly help to define our struggle...and it does. It prepares us for the greater good, and you know I am in love. (:
I will leave you all with the quote below:
Kind regards,
yj
quote:
"On a straight application of the doctrine of separation of powers, the Professor can have no authority to fire a member of the NA. However, we are dealing with explicit Constitutional text, and the authorisation is therefore beyond legal reproach in that it overrides mere arguments on political doctrine. With section 91(1)(d)) as backdrop, it is unlikely that any National Assembly Member would actively pursue a course of action likely to attract the displeasure of the Professor. This reduces the NA to a rubber stamp, making the passage of laws at odds with fundamental Constitutional dictates a mere formality. What is likely to happen to those laws when they lie at the heart of sensitive political disputes for judicial resolution remains the paramount concern of Gambians committed to the rule of law.
Although the landscape is mixed, judicial decisions in political disputes, either at the level of the magistracy, or the higher courts, heavily tilt toward unjust outcomes, a differential application of justice wholly attributable to the enervating political control of the Judiciary. Even where major miscarriages of justice routinely emanate in judicial decisions, there were, and will always be, decisions worthy of a place in the global annals of the finest instances of courage in politically controversial cases. The resolve to terminate the High Court trial of Ousainou Darboe on murder allegations, and at the prosecution phase of the case, was a brave and brilliant decision by the Judge concerned. At the other extreme were the travesties that sent the likes of Lamin Waa Juwara, and Baba Jobe, to prison for an unproven seditious allegation on the one hand, and an essentially civil dispute on the other. More recently, the imprisonment of the GPU Six on alleged sedition, and criminal defamation, underscores the disturbing political control of the Judiciary."LJD

Folks,
Agreeable! You can accept to hitch on Cherno Baba’s words and risk understanding the piece half way or get your lexicon nearby. I did the later. In the article “Of Press Freedom and Mass Enlightenment,” Cherno cried about Jammeh’s inaccessibility by the press. This is true because Jammeh won’t like being asked about Deyda, Koro, Daba, the witch craft activities etc…Imagine a press conference where Jammeh would have to answer these questions. What can he say?
Added to that, Cherno also argued that we need a vibrant press or media self-sacrificing individuals, the likes of Soyinka and the list of survivors of African dictatorships that would confront Jammeh heads on. This he attributed partially to “weakness.” In his closing statement, he said Gambia’s media are victims of Jammeh to a large extent and “its litany of inadequacies.”

Dear Compatriots,
http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2009/10/05/editorial--a-token-of-appreciation-for-participating-on-gainako’s-3rd-anniversary.html
It was a hard decision for our editorial team to reach at; that is closing the one month celebration of clocking three years. Personally, it is both an exciting and emotional moment for me. Now that the bar is raised so high by these contributors, how can such a momentum be maintained to the end of time? Such a challenge is on us all –it cannot be only on the online outlets. Words can hardly capture our appreciation for your participation. We hope that you all benefited greatly. We humbly ask you all to find time to send these contributors appreciation or thank you cards, as a way of encouragement.
Forward with Enlightenment!
Down with tyranny!
