You are right Njuks.
I was billed 12,000.00 for water connection. I was only 90 meters from the main pipe. I was told that i could NOT get connected from that junction because pressure will be low and therefore have to get the main pipe near my house. It took me a year or so get my bill processed so that i can pay. The funniest thing is, even if you are prepared to pay all thses prohibitive prices legally, there is no one ready to listen to you.
It is the only company i have seen that does not like to do things right. As soon as you want to cheat, there are endless means of doing it.
Infact when water was connected and it took almost a year to have the bill sent to me. I literally had to go their office and give someone a ride to read my meter. Eventually when the bill came, it turned out into thousands. I paid it in full. But how many people will go after them to read their meters. My papers were very legal. I had all my receipts fro application to installAtion having previously paid 12,000.00

I dont despise gambia. That is home but the problems are real before our eyes. If yaya is dismissing because of corruption, then he is also guilty of the same practice. The difference is he has the power to gag and dismiss. He should face the commision and tell us why his grand children will never be rich. It was rumoured that the generator that was bought about five years ago was actually an old one from mauritania and then refurbished.
Shortly after the "new"generator arrived, Mauritanians were exempt from paying residential permits. Well no heads rolled in that one because it affected him directly. You will recall that the generator was cleared from the ports around 3:00 in the afternoon and traffic was blocked from Banjul to Serrekunda so that he could tell all of us his "new" generator has arrived. The generator was actually older than him. IF YOU LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE DO NOT THROW STONES. Unfortunately he has been doing just that. he neds to show the way and every one will respect the rules. IT IS NOT DO AS I SAY BUT DO AS I DO.

absolutely. for me the the employees taking advantage of the company have a lot to answer. there are many like you who are willing to pay up but '' this potential market they will never tap, money they badly need!!
infact sadly even major customers like hotels and ordinary people are building their own independent systems like bore holes. sucking water for FREE!! because its free they use it irresponsibly, eventually the water table will just get deeper.
when our street was partly submerged for a couple of days, i used our telephone at our cost to call NAWEC. i even took the pole for ease of reference. guess what the guy who answered told me
'' that i should hold on, so he can give me a number to call as thats not his job''
i hanged up and let the water waste, since they dont care. the more corrupt practices they do the more difficult it is to fix the problem. how can you bill someone who is not even on the system!!
we can go on forever with nawec, |

Many thanks for all those positives contributions. Jammeh is a problem. Jawara before him was a problem. So to avoid whoever will come after Jammeh not to fall in this mess; we the ones in the waiting gov't must brace up to take the bulls by the horns. Lets recognise the chronic attitudinal problems that are with us.Even if Halifa Sallah is elected despite his wisdom and sincerity and patriotism and we the rest of mankind don't change for the better then we will make him fail. Self crticism is very vital to personal development. Lets work for the future generations.
If the corrupt Jammeh gpv't builds 10schools and the opposition builds 1 school which is better equipped and staffed, that will be a bench mark and the masses can atleast trust the opposition. PDOIS started the Nyakoi nursery and primary schools in Bundung. My niece was one of the pioneers, she is now in grade 12 in a top high school and very promising. The base was very good. What Pdois preached was self-less service a true gov't of the people and for the people.
In the last republic an opposition candidate defeated a very infleuntial ppp candidate in a big constituency in the provinces. One of the reasons why that guy won was that he personally undertook many developments to counter the utopic political promises of the then PPP. Despite the PPP pumping lots of money, and intimidating the masses, this opposition guy won. A HAND IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH.
I am very opptimistic that the vast human resource The Gambia has in the diaspora can be vital in the new Gambia, post Jammeh era. |

| OKAAAAY! Perhaps if Jammeh starts paying his arrears in Kanilia then MAYBE NAWEC can have a bit more to go around. I mean can you believe this nonsense!? Jammeh tells us all that he does not pay electricity and water in Kanilia, “It is free”, he said….and he expects NAWEC to be profitable? Jammeh is the number one meter buccaneer—the man is an extortionist. Amigo Jeng should send the guy a bill, let him pay! he is entitled to have free electricity in BANJUL State house....not Kanilai, that is not part of the deal. Jawara did it in his Fajara residence when he charged Gambia government rent for staying in his own home, and Jammeh wnet nuts about it in 1994. Now Jammeh has forgotten, he not only steals the lectricity for himslef and his household, but for his whole village!!!!! This is madness. |

We know some trees are decorated in kanillai like chrismas trees, or like the light rows in chicago, IL. Unless, and until, those in the forefront of the admistration show responsibility, then we are truly stocked for eternity. One part of that is accountability and tranparency. All the money that Jammeh spent in the last hajj, also on these so called festivals in kanillai are enough to stabilize our electricity problems.
More so respect for the rule of law, and the citizenry of a country is a fundamental aspect in any decent society. Respecting humanity cannot be compared to any infrastructural development. The minds must be at ease, and the society must be free for people to breathe fresh air. If the whole struggle takes to equate ourselves to him, for his narrow mindedness, then what are we waiting for ? If he [Jammeh] can say what he said , then let him release the independent detainees, as he is exercising his freedom of speech without responsibility, while those innocent young folks are illuminating a whole world using their pens.
It is even embrassing, for those that go to meet him, only to be disgraced openly. No wonder, some wise societal catalysts will never meet him for discussion. How about engage in a fruitful dialogue, offer solutions and implement actions, rather mere talk to seize the freedom of people. We can conclude now, "dictatorship" at its best, 'teh yeh muneh'. I rest my case on this one ! |

"Neh na Bepareh". I cannot agree more Dalton1. Those journalist are doing a fantastic job of educating the citizenry and are exercising their constitutional rights to free speech.
They will always be in my prayers. A democratic society cannot evolved without free press and the life of a journalist in the gambia is one of the most dangerous jobs anywhere in the world. Every day is a potential crises and jail has now become home from home.

What I can't understand is why it has taken Gambia so long to solve these basic problems of water and electricity, and I think it's too simplistic to blame everything on Jammeh like him or loathe him. Corruption, jealousy and envy seems to be the three vices stifling Gambia's growth.
There seems to be complacency culture in Gambia that a job is a job for life because one person knows someone or is related to another. Instead of judging staff in the Public sector on their competencies in relation to carrying out the work they are supposed to do.
If Gambia and Africa wants to sustainably progress further, corruption needs to be put under control and greater scrutiny through monitoring work performance be applied across the board for better work performance and delivery. And those people who are not meeting certain targets should be kicked out because they are helping to weigh down the boat not keeping it a float, and be replaced with people who have the ability to do the job, and in so doing making the system more efficient and effective for the end users.

I think this not time for talk. Jammeh this Jammeh that. Why using Jammeh as a scapegoat. Lets get up and get off to work before its too late or before we are caught off guard again. Jammeh may have failed in his duties and responsibilities does that mean WE MUST STANDBY AND IDLE WHILE THE WORLD GOES BY. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. WE OWN THE GAMBIA NOT JAMMEH.
Self-discipline is lacking in many civil servants back home. The culture of getting the most out of the work place must stop. Last to walk in to office and first to leave MUST STOP.Tips before any work MUST be done MUST also stop. Big companies are going down not becos Gov't is not providing the enabling sometimes its becos of the laziness, and laisser-faire attitude of SOME OF our kinsmen. Everyone WANTs to enjoy but DOES NOT want to sweat for it. EASY MONEY. Thats why most of our youths, wen they first arrive in the West realize there is NO EASY MONEY. It must be worked for no-matter what. GAMTEL used to be top two in telecoms in Africa, but its no more. Is it Jammeh? No! Wen Bakary Njie was there he was noted for, FAIR-PLAY AMONGST HIS STAFF, STAFF MOTIVATION, STAFF TRAINING ETC. How many BKs do we need? now in Gamtel every other time some staff has ran away with large sums of money. And people instead of condemning it would congrtulate it. THEY WILL SAY 'DA FA AM FAYDA' meaning he's ambitious. the Late artist EBOU MADI SILLAH was one that believed in hardwork and fairplay. I have never seen that man TALK EVIL ABOUT OTHERS AND HE IS ALWAYS WORKING AND CONTENTED WITH THE LITLE HE HAD. To me that's a SUCCESFUL MAN.TOUARY OF CUSTOMS IS ANOTHER GAMBIA WORTH EMULATING.Tambajang too seems to be following in his footsteps. Though Jammeh is problem is some areas, but we also play our roles. There is aprticular Senior Accountant who once told me , wen these boys(AFPRC) came he took early retirement BECOS HE WON'T WORK FOR THEM. Guess what this is one of those guys who looted Gov't in the infamous LPOs(local purchase orders) scam. Now is running a buisness and most of his clients are top civil servants. When there is tender these Top civil servants ensures he gets one or more contracts for supply of materials at cut throat prices. Is this fair? the next minute meet him in his ATTAYA VOUS where he acts the good samaritan by dishing money left, right and centre. He won't hesitate to condemn this present gov't as USELESS while thats the system that made him and still making him. I once told him that i have quit gov't service. He patted me on the back and said SUMA RAKA LOLU BAAH NA(my brother thats good) but i was quick to add to him that i am pursing higher eduaction in the UK but as soon as possible once i complete i intend to go back come what may and i STILL STAND BY THAT.
However if we are hoping to live a welfare economy in The Gambia that's centuries away. Unless we change our attitudes CORRUPTION, LAZINESS, INDIFFERENCE we will NEVER MOVE. I have been to to some West, North and Esat African countries but am very impressed with the nationalism of their youth and entrepreneural skills. MANNA WILL NEVER FALL FROM THE SKIES. That's the bottomline. |

Ever since the first republic Gambians have withnessed constant electricity failure. Is it investment or efficient management lacking in our national grid folks help me out.Managing directors come and go but the status quo remains.whenever i read nawec and its uncurable disease my heart is fill with sadness.for more than three decades Gambians cannot enjoy the previledge of uninterrupted power supply. The chairman of the board of directors in audiance with the president said non payments of bills, high cost of fuel, illegal connections are some of the constraints facing nawec.Well explained mr chairman but what is mangement doing to overcome the problems. They ought to be do something about it because that is why they are paid with fat salaries.Management need to carry out strategic thinking to overcome this ailing predicament. First I think non payment of bills could be arrested by setting up a limited usage payment system.Every customer would sign up a limited power usage with nawec and if for some reasons the bill goes beyond then supply goes off automatically. The limited usage system should be measured with the level of income per customer.By doing this customers would avoid high bills and nawec would be in control of its revenue reserves. If for some reasons the customer could not settle his bills then a payment plan could be drawn after the completion of which power would be restored. The high cost of electricity is beyond the control of nawec as this are world market problems but management should be working flat out to overcome or minimise the problem.I believe the needless bureuacracy at the top up management level is seriously hunting naewecs expenses. To beat expenses down why cant nawec restructure its organisational chart by amalgamating personnel and human resoureces for example as one sole unit and get rid of needless pen pushers in these departments. This should follow suit in all departments.I strongly believe that as a service oriented company nawec need front line staff like engineers who are paid less salary than need less managers who hardly contribute nothing to the upliftment of the company. When that is done part of that money could be redirected on fuel expenditure. Finally nawec need to come up with a computerised data system to fight illegal connections. It will be difficult to root out this problem considering our society setting but again i called on management to engage in deep thinking to resolve or minimise the problem.I suggest that nawec start issuing an ID badge to each consumer. This badge must bear your photo, name, date of birt and other personal security details.Whenever their meter readers go to read the meters an ID must be shown and failure to produce one would tanatamount to prosecution.A fine of 5000 dalasis as a penalty to offenders would help to root out the trouble. In court the offender would be forced to name the staff who help in the illegal connection and that staff would be given the marching orders.folks keep them coming as nawec is a scar in our country and it is an obligation on all to help restore uninterrupted electricity that a Gambian desrve to enjoy. |
