Jambo, one is not only reminded of the proverb, it's also a manifestation of the scapegoat hunting in African politics. Failed leaders always look for subordinates to cast the blame on. This clearly explains why highly qualified Africans prefer to stay abroad.

Bamba i cannot agree more. Very soon you will hear him appoint himself as head of the energy portfolio. There is some likely hood that he wants to buy some equipment, milk the profits and then let the portfolio go. It happened twice in agriculture when they bought tractors, he was the seceretary of state, also at Natural Resources when there were to be some oil exploration deals, etec.

It is a pattern i have come used to. He likes to take credits for everything and as such he will prosecute, then try to buy a generator and pocket the difference. When there is no juice anymore, he hands over the job to someone else. It was the same thing in Fisheries.

Something I cannot comprehend .Is Jammeh the one to fire and prosecute or is it the law? This guy seems not to even learn from his blunders-not at all! It is good that he is saying all these blunders, and they will not vote for him. This level of confusion and complexity is very disturbing. Something is honestly wrong somewhere. Power is with things that those of us are yet to experience/know. All I know, it's full of arrogance, evilness, etc... If such is what power means in all respect, may God Almighty never put me in such positions. I am sure there is something that the ordinary will need to know.

Why not Ikemefuna. He was a poor boy who was sacrificed by a trusted Okonkwo, his guardian. Are you very hot at the moment that Oknokwo will give you the energy to carry on?

The earlier they know that buying a generator and dancing around it from Ports to Nawec alone does not solve the energy problem the better. Upgrading and maintaining transmission and distribution lines together with the necessary protective devices are as important.

Do they really buy these things? I can never trust most of our African leaders. If they do buy them, they inflate the price to pocket the difference. I dont know what makes most African leaders unsympathetic towards their subjects no sooner they become leaders. This is a mystery that will follow to my grave.

Greetings Everyone,

It's about time that NAWEC gets a shake up they have been failing the people for years. NAWEC needs to second experts in the field to fix the electricity and water supplies for once and for all. So that the whole of Gambia has a 24/7 electrcity supply. If people have to loose their jobs to make this happen then so be it.

Peace

But the frequencies of change of NAWEC heads is really petrifying, isnt it? Who can be convinced that no NAWEC head can yeild to expectations. There is something rotten about NAWEC somewhere, a classified rot. How can heads in Africa operate on restrained budgets? That's the question.

FOLKS LETS FACE IT. DESPITE JAMMEH'S BLUNDER WE SOME GAMBIANS ARE SIMPLY NOT PATRIOTIC. HOW MANY NAWEC STAFF WOULD PUT OFF YOUR AREA BECOS, THEY HAVE A PERSONAL AXE TO GRIND WIT U? HOW MANY ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS ARE DONE A DAY? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE STAFF SABOTAGED NEWEC EQUIPMENT IN THE MYOPIC WAY OF THINKING ALONG POLITICAL LINES. NAWEC DOES NOT BELONG TO JAMMEH BUT THE GAMBIA AND GAMBIANS. IF NAWEC IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY WHO BEARS THE BRUNT MOST? MOMODOU HAS MADE A POSITIVE POINT. I WILL NOT CALL NAMES THERE WAS A SO-CALL INTELLECTUAL SOS AND NAWEC MD WHO WERE FIRED. YOU KNOW WHY? THEY CHEATED THE GAMBIAN PEOPLE THINKING IT WAS JAMMEH THEY WERE DUPING. THATS SAD. THESE TWO GUYS HIGHLY QUALIFIED ACADEMICALLY, BOUGHT A VERY OLD GENERATOR FOR NAWEC, THEY INFLATED THE PRICE. AFTER A SHORT WHILE IT WENT DOWN. GOV'T SECRETLY CONTACTED THE COMAPNY THAT SOLD THEM THE GENERATOR, THE COMAPNY GAVE GOV'T THE TRUE DETAILS. IT WAS SOLD TO NAWEC AT ALESSER PRICE AND IT WASN'T A NEW ONE BUT A SECOND HAND. GAMBIA NAD GAMBIANS ENEMY IS NOT ONLY JAMMEH BUT A HOST OTHERS.

DESPITE US LEAVING OVERSEAS SHOULD NOT BE AN EXCUSE TO DESPISE OUR COUNTRY BECOS OF ITS CURRENT HEAD. THE GAMBIA WAS THERE BEFORE JAMMEH, THE GAMBIA WILL THERE AFTER JAMMEH. SO LETS SPEAK PROGRESSIVELY AND CUT OUT THE RANCOUR.

What do you think is the solution for Nawec. It looks like there is a lot of leakages. I believe that all the illegal connections are due to low tansmission and the resultant embargos. There are many areas on embargos for over 5 years now. This results to the underground deals.

If we increase out put there will not be any long waiting lists and therefore , no illegal connections. Nawec staff will therfore not be able to ask for money beacsue there will not be the need.

Gamtel used to be like that in the 1990s. There were many lines than the demand and connections could be done within 48hours of an application. Now that demand has gone beyond supply it is becoming very hard. In some areas, there are no more open lines. Corruption is beginning to take place before you are alocated a telephone line. In most cases lines are seized from defaulting customers so that you can get one. We need to increase capacity.

Unfortunately it is basic law of supply and demand. Shortage leads to high prices, hoarding and increased bereaucracy.

My area was on embargo for three years even though we were in the heart of serrekunda and every home around us has electricity. We used to open our back doors to allow light into our rooms from our neighbors. We were an island looking for water.

What does Nawec means in our local language? In wollof, it means ‘rainy season’, so in resemblance the company can only be seasonal in meaning. ‘Joke of the matter.’

Now, let’s crack the fingers in view of the problem, and offer solutions.

The generators as mentioned above are of course factual, and one cannot also rule out the bad elements involved in the illegal activities of “hooks without pay.” Also, collections are being misdirected. At the same time, the Jammeh administration is negligence, absolutely don’t care.
-of course, proper management will include good maintenance measures
-accountability and transparency
-More so, consideration and being concerned about the issue at hand.
-good electricity is better than the mere standing arch 22.
-respecting the employees, and being honest in dealings.

It reminded me of what Kejaw said here at a time, our educated ones are in for partying and aiding dictators.

I am sure Jammeh’s language is far from being the solution. If there is any liar, masking people in an election year, it would be no body, but Jammeh. I believe honest and decent minds understand the game so much, that they cannot afford to take this cover any more. The funny thing about this Jammeh pla **** is that his electric broom is a blind one. Gambians are a little over that game now. Random hire and fire will never solve the problem. The lack of job security will leed others to indulge in malpractices, any way out. Right ! We certainly know in Kanilai, it is 24/7 non-stop electricity. The funny thing though, Jammeh cannot preach honesty, accountability and transparency to any one. If he is that clean, let him go through a commission like Obasanjo did. If I were to hold anyone for all this nonsense, would be no one but him. Jammeh’s hands cannot be clean in it, and I look forward to a day when all shall be unveiled. It appears that ‘tyranny’ is a creeping virus, like Michael Moore put it in his book “..the powerful virus that affected Colin Powel.” I am afraid that this creeper is a dangerous one.

Quite frankly, Jammeh’s language and deeds could only proof lacking in morals, and efficiency. It is really intimidating, as a matter of fact, the very problem to this small Gambia is only one person, Jammeh. Until, such a time that accountability takes headway, Jammeh’s saliva will be stinking all over the place. Let the law be given the respect, and not some prophets of boredom. It's quite disturbing that a man believed to occupy the highest position in the land, can only resort to such societal disrespect, as if there is no law in the land.

But you know what olof njie jehalna, noneh "amneng gharab pur ku rewkih"/we got prescription for the arrogant.

Let Nawec change name then..."closing joke".

Kondorong, isn't the review below a better character to choose-if there is a choice of the two. May be we wanna open another discussion page for "things fall apart."

net review

"Things Fall Apart, Achebe's first novel, was published in 1958 in the midst of the Nigerian renaissance. It tells the story of an Ibo village of the late 1800's and one of its great men, Okonkwo, who has achieved much in his life. He is a champion wrestler, a wealthy farmer, a husband to three wives, a title-holder among his people, and a mamber of the select egwugwu whose members impersonate ancestral spirits at tribal rituals. "The most impressive achievement of Things Fall Apart..." maintains David Carroll in his book Chinua Achebe, "is the vivid picture it provides of Ibo society at the end of the nineteenth century."

Madiba , Well done

the problem of NAWEC is too old but for some reason it has survived.until public attitudes changes, then i'm sorry ...

you can group the problem into three areas:

1.commercial
2.technical
3.management

the first is a result of people not paying their bills, and illegal connections not being metered, and silly NAWEC staff doing petty jobs here and there.infact NAWEC itself is overstaffed.

the second only money can solve. loses in transmission and distribution are too high partly due to years of under investment (loses 3 x what it is accepted). in the mean time you have the Brusibis, Brikamas expanding with the boom in construction activity etc. the demand keeps growing whilst the capacity and network is aging! remember that there is only 46MW installed and only half of that is then generated. the demand could well be 100MW and growing

all the petty jobs and illegal connections are a result of weak corporate structures. trust me if you sold NAWEC to any european company or multinational committed to profit making all this nonesense, it would stop, because those involved would be sacked on the spot. the customers with illegal connections would have their meters and pipes, connections removed!!! please dont misunderstand me when i say customers, this includes supermarkets etc

why should some steal water when others are paying. there are even some who are willing to pay and do everything legally but they can't even have it!

perhaps NAWEC is too weak to manage both water and electricity together??

attitudes have to change.
