*JOINT PRESS RELEASE STGDP & GPU USA*

The Gambia Press Union USA Branch (GPU-USA) And Save The Gambia Democracy Project (STGDP), a pro-democracy movement working for the restoration of good governance, rule of law and press freedom in The Gambia, jointly condemn the recent arrests, prosecution and subsequent sentencing of the six Gambian journalists to two years imprisonment.

These two groups further condemn the Gambian Government's continued suppression of press freedom, its flagrant human rights abuses and its coercive policies against the good of the country and her people. We demand a total end to the disappearances of innocent Gambian citizens, the manipulation of the judiciary and the violation of the Gambian Constitution.

The recent unjust sentencing of the six innocent Gambian journalists, which included a frail lactating mother, is the height of brutality. It is yet another clear demonstration of President Yahya Jammeh's willingness to go to any length in his efforts to root out dissent and deny his constituents their rights of free speech as enshrined in the Constitution.

Despite the numerous condemnations from the European Union, the United States State Department, Amnesty International, Media foundations and women’s rights groups from all over the world for the unconditional release of these journalists; the Jammeh regime has shown no sign of bowing to pressure. Thus, we ask that more pressure be brought to bear on Jammeh for the unconditional release of these innocent journalists, and for a total end to the harassment of the Gambian press.

It is our stand that Jammeh's impunity should be met with unrelenting pressure from international organizations and organized Gambian groups. The international community must be continuously reminded to pay attention to the daily plight of Gambians as they exercise their rights of speech and association, as they languish in jails, and as they disappear beyond any trace. The international community must increase the pressure on Jammeh to live up to the obligations of humanity and of international norms and conventions.

We call on the United States Government, the European Union, the United Nations, Media foundations and organized Gambian groups to not only issue condemnations but also follow through to ensure concrete actions with proven results are being taken against Jammeh and his government officials.

Such actions should include, but not limited to, a travel ban on Jammeh, the suspension of diplomatic relations, the withholding of financial and military aid, and the issuance of an open international warning that the world would not sit idly by and watch Jammeh continue his spates of arrest, imprisonment and torture. In addition, we call on all civic Gambian organizations to increase their participation on the important matters of Gambian rights and liberties and to expand the profile of the Gambian condition to the international audience.

We hereby pledge on the following:

• The collaboration of the STGDP and the GPU USA and any other civic Gambian organizations in the pursuit of democratic gains and palliative recourses to justice in The Gambia.

. The creation of a Media and Emergency Fund to help defray costs of legal fees and render financial assistance to the needy families of the victims of the capricious Gambian judicial system.

• The strategic coordination and harmonization of international efforts in the advocacy against the Banjul Administration on the important issues of press freedom, good governance and respect for the rule of law.

*All Gambians and friends of the Gambia are urged to contribute to the Media and Emergency Fund on a monthly basis to support this much needed battle against impunity in the Gambia. Please send all your contributions to Joseph (Joe) Sambou, GPU USA Treasurer at 8046 South Kimbark Avenue Chicago, IL 60619. You may also request the account number from Joseph by sending an email to bork200@hotmail.com or gpuna@freegambia.net

Moe, I admire your deligence in supporting the dictator. I hope we can keep the debate civil so we can hear each other regardless of our view points.

First of all I came back from Gambia about a year ago and I am certain to go back when I need to, so that is a mute point.

Secondly, your passion about Jammeh can be traced to the fact that you and yours have been spared and not touched in the Gambia and therefore until that is done your blind support is understood and you are not the only one.

I hope you have more information than we do on what is going on in Jammeh world, but certainly innocent Gambians don't need the kind of oppression they have been subjected to. No human being with dignity and respect should be subjected to the kind of brutality and disrespect we have seen in the Gambia.

Anyone is free to support Jammeh as far as they can go... but what is true is that history is recording everything and time will tell who is on the right side of history.

We have seen these kind of movies before and they always end ugly and a betrayal to human decency....

Nop Moe, do not know you and have never seen you.... you certainly don't sound like someone from a small but decent village I came from. I disassociate myself with anything or anyone that has to do with dictator Jammeh. Reveal yourself just like I do and let's see who is who... It's easy to hide behind key boards.

Gambia is our home and we will go there as need be... no amount of intimidation can keep us away....

peace...

Get it right first before we can even go any further chinese shoes. I am no Jammeh supporter ,the Gambian problem is ya'll don't like people who state facts, Distorting the truth to save face is you number one skill.
No son you are lying Demba Baldeh, what time last year cos am pretty sure you were busy busting your butt with scrubs on, at the swedish med or may be its a tie for all i remember. You are the biggest liar in the west just exactly what i though of you. Just remember i have been to the Swedish medical center and as a reminder I am the grand marabout Demba and every thing that goes down at 425,206,360 I approve.I can tell you when you even had your last speeding ticket you fool.

Do you want me to specify about the pathetic life you arrogant self centered fools are living , we can discuss it since it's open to scrutiny. Who do you people think you are. When the wind of change blew everyone was affected. We received the hit first whilst you unworthy citizens were celebrating Victory. Who won now the fact is the only people you see being "opal" and over zealous are the non stake holders ,you ********s have nothing to loose and would care less if everything in Gambia was lost. You can start all over again, can't be hard.........................................Peace

Moe, I thought you are worth engaging but no, I am not wasting my time arguing with someone who has no boundaries.

As I said everyone on this forum or online including the Jammeh administration knows who I am. There is nothing hidden about who I am and off course you got your facts wrong because you got my employer wrong. You can google me and see what I do for a living...

Anyway, am glad you don't support Jammeh anymore. Your previous postings sure don't demonstrate that. Oh well, who am I to say...

One thing I know for sure when I meet you my head is not going down. I shall never disrespect you or anyone whatsoever... your artitude tells who you are.... if you live in greater Seattle then I am no stranger to you and you know what I stand for...

Moe, this is the last time you will insult anyone on this forum. You have gotten away too long with this big mouth of yours.

What have I written against you person that would warrant you telling bunch of lies about my person which you don't know jack about.

Your negative attitude towards people who are innocently come to bantata to exchange ideas is unacceptable and will not be tolerated anymore.

Do you think people cannot insult you the same way you do against other people on this forum?

Who do you think you are to insult people who never said a thing about you? and don't care if you exist.

If you are brave enough and not a corward and you claim to be who you are then meet me in Seattle.

Your sister probably lives a few blocs from where I live.. I now work close to where you live Modou Seray... I have heard about your rudeness in Seattle but you are up against a no nonsense person. I shall make it a duty to find you and then you will explain.

You did it in Kansas, came to Seattle and wants to do the same... Meet me at Factoria Mall with your indian.

Besides, I am immediately logging complain to the administrators to finally put a STOP to this nonsense. Nothing warrants anyone being subjected to such lies and fabrications.

Forum Administrators, I want to ask the following>

What are the rules of the forum? Does people deserve to be subjected to such rude and blantant lies that are nothing but made up stories?

Would you address this indecency on this forum from someone who is notorious on insulting people who has nothing to do with him?

I would like this to be addressed immediately... because my person won't allow anyone absolutely to subject me to such fabricated lies.

I await your response... Enough is enough and decent people don't need this disrespectful bipolar attitude among us. Bantaba has a history of decency and we cannot allow others to ruin that.

My regards...

Baldeh,

Admin, I am not concern about myself or anything written about me. I live an open live and can put my dignity and personal conducts against anyone and my head will remain high.

This is about other decent contributors on this forum who take time away from their busy lives to come here and exchange ideas and learn from each other.

This is about those decent Bantaba folks, who live with dignity, respect for their elders and self who don't deserve to be subjected to any profanity languague.

This is about all those who has been subjected to such maglinant attacks for no reason.

This is about an effort to scare away Gambians and friends of the Gambia who like to come here an have intellectual debates about our country and find a better solution to our problems.

This is also a clear demonstration of our moral clarity and valus that we seek to exemplify.

This need to stop here and anywhere it surface. It has no place in modern times and it needs to be confronted directly...

I did not get to see the most recent posting but, Please leave the remaining postings as is because they demonstrate who we are as people and our moral judgment.

Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused to Bantaba folks... I shall remain active and a part of this community regardless.

I meant to follow up on this press statement fellow Bantaba folks...

Our people are faced with so many challenges while many of us are fortunate to be in a position where we can earn a decent living and also be able to help our immediate families.

However, in light of continuous oppression of our citizens and rampant imprisonment of innocent citizens, GPU USA & STGDP saw the need to lead the struggle and put words into action.

We are reaching out to all Gambians and friends of the Gambia with conscience to help out the families of Jailed or disappeared Journalists and other innocent Gambians.

GPU USA in collaboration with our colleagues in the UK have been contributing to a fund that has gone a long way to help the Chief Manneh Family. See more about it....

http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2009/08/25/gpu-usa-sends-more-money-to-chief-manneh-family.html

Now we are setting up a permanent media fund that will go towards helping other families like chief manneh's.

We already have two people pledge $1,000 and $500 respectively to kick off this drive. We urge all who can to please consider contributing to this humanitarian gesture. We thought it would be helpful to set up some kind of a monthly contribution or any form say perform towards these funds.

Information on where and how to contribute can be obtained through the GPU treasurer as outlined on the press release. Please remember $10 a month can help a child eat before they go to bed...

We look forward to your support and the struggle moves from talking about it to doing something to make a difference..

Thanks for your kindness in advance...
