72 ministers in 15 years

16 Jul 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That by his single hand President Yahya Jammeh created and destroyed 72 State Ministers in 15 years is amazing. But something else is more serious. How he still insists being the best person to stay on that job of leading a nation he fails so badly, that is a matter for critical public concern. By all means, Jammeh has done exactly what he swore he would not do. He failed doing all that he promised he would do. The result is a trail of devastation for the hired and fired ministers, their friends, families, and all Gambians.

by PK Jarju

Birmingham, UK

A year hardly goes by without a secretary of state losing his/her job. Since July 22, 1994 a total number of 72 ministers/secretaries of state have served President Jammeh in various portfolios.

Out of the 72, 66 ministers/secretaries of state were sacked from their respective positions by President Jammeh. Four secretaries of state, Momodou Lamin Jobe, Joseph Henry Joof, Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta and Edward Singhatey resigned their posts.
Satang Jaw retired from her position as secretary of state for Education on health grounds.

Sanna Sabally, vice President of the AFPRC and Sadibu Haidara, minister for the Interior were arrested in January 1995 and jailed for allegedly trying to overthrow Jammeh. Sabally was released after completing his prison term while Haidara never made it out. He died in prison from 'high blood pressure' according to the state media.

Finance minister, Bakary Bunja Darbo fled the country after being implicated in the November 11,1994 alleged coup plot. His successor, Ousman Koro Ceesay died in 1995 a few days before the budget speech in a freak car accident. Many have accused the regime of having a hand in his murder.

Point of correction; Amie Bensouda has never being a minister in the AFPRC/APRC regime. She served as Solicitor-General in the ousted PPP administration but was kicked-out soon after the military takeover of 1994. She became a private legal practitioner ever since, and was never hired by the APRC regime.

I don't think Ms Bensouda would want to work for the APRC government even if she is offered a position. She is a woman of impeccable integrity and great professionalism.

Good list though.

Thanks

Good list Santa.

Would be interesting to know what all those doing now. I know several of them are still in the circus. Samba Faal is now mayor of Banjul; Susan Waffa Ogoo is ambassador i think, etc

Good point Jack,
Santa. perhaps you could assist and tell us the current employment of those on your list,if Jack is correct (and why shouldn't he be?) at least some of the list members have good positions.

According to this source, Amie Bensouda one time acted as Minister of Justice under A(F)PRC government.

Going by that, she qualifies a place on the 'Head Count'

Karamba, perhaps you would like to re-visit your source again. It did not state that Mrs Amie Bensouda was a minister. This is how your source stated it and rightly so;

'Amie was Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice from 1990 -1995'

The only Bensouda who served the APRC as a minister was Fatou Bom Bensouda who is now a prosecutor at the Hague.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks

Nyarikang, it is this bit making me think she would have served in some capacity.

....and also acted as Attorney General and Minister of Justice July/August, in 1994...

Hi guys, Jammeh is doing fine by our counts. He employs you and hope you deliver and if you dont he makes you history in the government. what is wrong with that??? Those that delivers stays and continue the good job.

It is the mark of intelligence to entertain an idea without accepting it.

Bread Man,

Greater respects to you my good fellow. Where have you been? By the fact that Chairman could not pick right people for the right jobs makes him being the wrong person to start with.

Karamba,

your source did not state that she was the Attorney- General and minister of justice. It stated ''Solicitor- General and Legal Secretary''. These are two different positions. The latter is a civil service position [an equivalent of a Permanent Secretary] and Mrs Bensouda was in this position well before the coup [since 1990]. She served less than a year after the coup. She never served the AFPRC/APRC in any political capacity either before or after that.

Please don't misquote your source again.

Thanks

Nyarikang,

These are not my words. The phrase is simply copied from text in quote. You are better advised to read, read, and read. It is dangerous to stick on error.

Read the full text from that source and let us know if the quoted phrase is not from the text.

Not my words, most respectfully.
