G/NUT TRADE SEASON IN LIMBO As Farmers Go Unpaid By Yaya Dampha
It is months now since the groundnut trade season started, without farmers being paid their monies. As always, before the start of the season, farmers were assured by the state that this year’s season would be a different one, as there would be no credit buying of nuts. However, credit buying has been taking place since the start of the trade season. The farmers, who wished to sell their produce, have taken them to the seccos and were given promissory notes. Farmers interviewed by (Foroyaa) all over the country, complain that it was only once that cash was brought to the seccos for payment. This according to a farmer in Salikeni Baddibu has caused many to lose the confidence of the neighbours who loaned them money to buy ram and clothes for their families, during the Tobaski feast.
Mr. Saikou Dampha, a farmer in Jappineh said he had taken part of his nuts to the Secco since January but he still could not get his money. He said this had caused him to pile the rest of his groundnuts and carry them to the Serrekunda market. When I visited the GGC Depot, in Barra, I discovered that all the stores there are full with nuts of last year’s trade season and that of this year, transported from the NBD, for onward transportation to the depot at. However, these nuts at the GGC depot in Barra started decomposing due to lengthy storage at the depot. When I asked the depot manager he said all their trucks have broken down and now they are relying on private truck owners who would only come when they are paid.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Secretary of State for Agriculture and the Managing Director of GGC before going to press have been unsuccessful. We hope to get their comments this week.

| This is a routine ritual that farmers have to undergo every year. There is nothing new. yet they are paraded as dancers to the emperor during meet the farmers tour. Ignorance is a serious disease. |

It has and will always be the case. If we have a stupid president who thinks that buying cars represents development then thinks like this will always be the order of the day.
I think farmers will now wake up to the realities of the upheaval of jammeh's being. What pains my heart though is the fact that these poor people are the ones that will always vote him.
The unfortunate thing is that they are ignorant of their right and share of the national cake. Robbing the farmers of their livelihood is the biggest sin on jammeh's shoulders.
The nation cannot but the farmers produce yet he is wasting huge amounts of money on beech parties. Honestly, there is a problem is this man's head. No doubt!

We have serious issues to deal with in Gambia. The poverty rate has doubled, and this just proves what I have been saying all along. TRUST ME: A Bag of rice before 2006 is out will be D1000! I have not been wrong thus far, sadly. I am also predicting that, Yayha now has the carte blanc to what he likes (with the new amendment to section 96 of the constitution which now states) "the President may, in the public interest, declare by order published in the Gazette, that a general election of all members of the National Assembly shall be held on such date as he or she shall determine", He will declare a ONE PARTY State as soon as he wins the 2006 elections. He will change the constitution to make it easier for him to propose this...trust me. I am not a soothsayer, I am just doing deductive reasoning, the trend tells us that Yahya is out for 100% power regardless of the consequences. And Gambians will let him have it (thus far he has about 70%). He appoints the judiciary, ministers, and by default can 'fire' NAMs. What next? Peace.

Pipeline, I believe the opposition is helping him in his task. Their disintegration is only helping jammeh. If they stayed united it would have been a forgone conclusion come October.
However, there is still hope that he will not survice the impending elections. |

taalibeh i strongly believe NADD will defeat jammeh, everything being equal. my concern is, suppose NADD wins, would jammeh hand over power peacefully.if not what are the repercussions waiting for him. |

That will be taken care of. Let us make sure we boot him out come October.
And please pipeling do not forget to lobby your family to cast for NADD. We are all in the struggle together. If every Gambian supporting NADD in the diaspora gets ther familys' vote for NADD then victory is assured.
Nothing should be undervalued. In this situation, evey little helps. |

Dont count your chickens before they are hatched. I am not as optimistic as Taalibeh. Anyway judging by his name, he has wisdom so i will not question his base. |

Pineline...I am fascinated to know how you ended up in East Timor and what you do there? Also what is that society like? Perhaps you could do a separate topic to tell us more about it when you have time? |

Bev, Gambians are dispersed all over the globe. We are well represented on the planet. This is why I am so optimistic that when we pooled our resources we will eventually be victorious in driving the devil out of state house.

pipeline, I used to also think that NADD will beat Jammeh. But now I am not so sure. Do the stats: In a 3 way, maybe even a 4 way race (APRC, UDP/NRP, NADD, PDP), APRC will just hold their numbers, buy the oppositions’ voters cards and hoard them thus stopping them from voting. Remember it is a winner-take all no 2nd round. If that does not work, then Jammeh will make sure that IEC’s Ndondi Njie does not dare announce results that do not suit Jammeh. He will win in 2006, by hook or by crook. He has told us this many, many, times. The last of which I quote:
“Billahi Wallahi Tallahi, if you want to be the President of this country, I can swear to Almighty Allah, you must be more patient than a vulture, because I am not giving you the power now. When am I going to hand over The Gambia to you? And before that I will not hand over The Gambia. The day we achieve what is enshrined in Vision 2020, the day The Gambia and your oil benefits every Gambian and non-Gambian, the day your oil benefits every African and all sets of human race, the day The Gambia becomes a superpower, that is the day I will hand over the power to you the Gambian people. You have at least 30 years to wait. Do I raise any eyebrows? Yes, the British were here for 400”.
There you have it folks!
