Just to take the heat of the kettle, let me put in another poem by Ms Angelou. One of my sisters sent it to me the other day (her comment: 'only thing i have to do now is buy myself a black lace bra and i should be fine') and i sent it on to some of my women friends who were not all in agreement with the poet (to say the least). Still, i think there are one or two bits of good advice........

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
enough
money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own,
even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
something
perfect to wear if the employer,
or date of her dreams
wants to see her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD
HAVE .
a youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
a past juicy
enough that she's looking forward to
retelling it in her
old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
one friend who
always makes her laugh.. and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
a good piece
of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her
family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
eight
matching plates, wine glasses with stems,
and a recipe for
a meal,
that will make her guests feel honoured...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
a feeling of
control over her destiny..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD
KNOW...
how to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to quit
a job,
break up with a lover,
and confront a friend
without;
ruining the friendship...

EVERY WOMAN
SHOULD KNOW...
when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK
AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that she can't change the length of her calves,
the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that her
childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over.....

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
what she
would and wouldn't do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW....
how to live
alone... even if she doesn't like it...

EVERY
WOMAN SHOULD KNOW..
whom she can trust,
whom she can't,
and why she shouldn't take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
where to
go...
be it to her best friend's kitchen table..
or a
charming Inn in the woods....
when her soul needs
soothing...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW..
What she can and can't accomplish in a day...
a
month...and a year...

Thanks Anna for posting this poem I am pleased to be invited to respond, and be the first to do so,the others maybe are still in battle!
To me this is a much clearer poem to understand, although I suspect that many women would disagree with the content,as that gives the impression of service to others, nothing wrong in that of course, but the impression is still there that a woman is not completly independant and this will remain with her for her passage through life. The modern feeling for a woman, (I am a bloke,so I should not comment!) I believe is that she is her own person and that she should live her life as she wants to.One thing that the poem does not mention, which I think odd is children, the poem is about her progress through life and the thoughts that she may have and what is expected of her by others, children are not part of that anywhere.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

That is a very apt and justified remark, T1020! I have to admit that i (as a woman, mother and grandmother) had not thought about that at all (yet) . So you see, you're not al all 'a mere bloke'.
Thanks for the comments. You might be surprised to hear that many of your observations were also made by some of my friends (all girls ).

Renaissance blacks/ women’s, my respect start with her since her touch with B. Clinton.
As poet/poem lover, I pass over of her some books. Like “witches don’t do back flips” “Ich weiß, warum der gefangene Vogel singt= I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes and …

She has paving the way for the future success of many like Alice Walker, Toni Mo, Terry McMillan, S Anne Williams, and many.

Is she just writing about my Gambian/African folks?
Jealousy is not bad, in fact Sharaxole saying goes „If you have a son with no envious/jealousy his maleness is not full" but our folk turns it to hate, some tribes/folks are just sick!
Therefore, you just cannot help them.
As She wrote” When God gives you favor, you can tell your haters, 'Don't look at
me...Look at Who is in charge of me...' If God wanted you to be
like somebody else, He would have given you what He gave them! Right?
She just talks straight to my heart.

Good to have you back Mbay!

Folks,

I was reading Miss Gambia's interview, and thought could share here.

If a woman is a "beauty queen," you better give it to her.

Well Anna, Hmmmmm. I think the poem is a brilliant poem and it's a constant reminder of who we are supposed to be as a person and whats important. It's a reminder, telling you that you are the most precious thing in your life and to take great care of our self like a queen . The only thing you can look back on is a productive life ,It talks about total independence and preparedness for obstacles in your life. The poem has a great reference to women ,but am assuming the poem is not gender based its for everyone. It's a poem for women alright!!!! but everyone can relate to ,for if i have a date i better have a nice suit for the occasion ...................................................Peace
