Hater/ By Maya Angelou
A hater is someone who is jealous and envious and spends all their
time trying to make you look small so they can look tall.
They are very negative people to say the least. Nothing is ever good enough!
When you make your mark, you will always attract some haters...
That's why you have to be careful with whom you share your blessings and your dreams, because some folk can't handle seeing you blessed...
It's dangerous to be like somebody else..... If God wanted you to be
like somebody else, He would have given you what He gave them! Right?
You never know what people have gone through to get what they have...
The problem I have with haters is that they see my glory, but they don't know my story...
If the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, you can rest assured that the water bill is higher there too!
We've all got some haters among us!
Some people envy you because you can:
a) Have a relationship with God
b) Light up a room when you walk in
c) Start your own business
d) Tell a man / woman to hit the curb(if he / she isn't about the right thing)
e) Raise your children without both parents being in the home
Haters can't stand to see you happy.
Haters will never want to see you succeed.
Most of our haters are people who are supposed to be on our side.
How do you handle your undercover haters?
You can handle these haters by:
1. Knowing who you are & who your true friends are
*(VERY IMPORTANT!!)
2. Having a purpose to your life: Purpose does not mean having a job. You can have a job and still be unfulfilled.
A purpose is having a clear sense of what God has called you to be.
Your purpose is not defined by what others think about you.
3. By remembering what you have is by divine prerogative and not human manipulation.
Fulfill your dreams! You only have one life to live...when its your
time to leave this earth, you 'want' to be able to say, 'I've lived my life and fulfilled 'my' dreams,... Now I'm ready to go HOME!
When God gives you favor, you can tell your haters, 'Don't look at
me...Look at Who is in charge of me...'

Rightly put by your few words, in recap for the posted poem.
I think very well the poem is worth reflection. In Islam, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in one of the authentic hadiths warned about the diseases of the heart---and jealousy happens to be one of them. Candidly to be put, that no one is an angel or Island (Courtesy of english proverbs.) It is however important to note, jealousy is best in the admiration sense, where you admire something from someone and try to learn from him/her, or possibly share with him/her. The best way to over-come this vice is not to try to know peoples' personal lives too much, or avoid being overly greedy or straightening your hand for every fancy material. This brings a state of trainsquil, peace, harmony and love into ones' heart, and essentially a healing tool to this feared vice. It is as well a tradition of the prophet to supplicate for protection from seen and unseen vices. While we cannot control anyones' mindset, we can help by continious counseling. The happiest people in this world are those free from hearts' diseases. Jealousy is a bad friend, imaginarly one that can ruin ones personality and physical nature. It can eat and grind inside you and make you live unhappy. Jealousy from husband and wife (boy-girl relation) would fall under admiration jealousy.
May God purify us all, and heal us from such feared vices.

Your interpretation Dalton1 is very good,but I fear that nothing will change if is part of your inbuilt nature to be jelous of others, maybe it is because you have nothing, maybe it is because of money, maybe it is brcause of success in your life ,many many things.
One thing is for certain it is a very bad sin in all the religions that I know of (I may be mistaken here,someone may correct me,please do if I am wrong).

I beg to differ. I do not think jealousy is a sin. Hate would be (Thou shall love his/her neighbor ..., is that how it is said?). I think Dr. Angelou's poem did not equate jealousy to hate. She only said that jealousy and envy could lead to hate. That certainly does not make them sinful or diseases of the heart. We are all wired for these emotions; they are part of our evolutionary make-up. Both jealousy and envy could be very health emotions. In fact jealousy and envy are two different things. While jealousy might be the (fierce) protection of what you (yourself) have, envy might be the (fierce) admiration and envy of what you do not have. An individual could be jealous over his/her spouse, children, money, car, house, and other properties and relationships, or envious of another's same things that he/she does not have. Without some (healthy) level of jealousy and envy mankind may lack its competitiveness and a sense of achievement and success. Both emotions may also be essential for our tendency for altruism.
Hate then might be the untold disease of the heart; and it may be rooted on more complex feelings also such as fear and a sense of injustice... . |

| Kay,you are thoughtful and right as usual,(well most times anyway!) I should not have referred to Jealousy as a sin,I should have explained my thoughts better, Jealousy is not good, therefore it is bad, therefore No religion can condone Jealousy. |

| I agree Dalton, I am no poet but reading the words makes one think of many things and then one questions your inital thought and realise that is perhaps not what the writer intended the reader to think, there are sentences that take you back to the starting point to think again,like you understanding this is difficult,so in that case there can be many meanings none identical. |

thanks for your debating spirit always, and I appreciate that.
In Maya's Poem, she started by defining what a 'hater' is. Poems are all subjected to interpretation. There are some lessons to draw from the forwarded poems. One event leads to another. will forward more...

Moe,all I can say to you is that I comment on WHAT is posted I HAVE NO IDEA WHO IS WHO ,you maybe do,I do not care who THEY are as I said I am happy to comment on THEIR postings,I have very little interest in politics or religion, to other people these subjects are their lives,I am only on this bantaba because I have been to The Gambia quite a few times and I like the place,one thing that The Gambia has is PEACE and long may that continue,I hope that has clarified my interest in bantaba and made things a little less difficult for you to understand.
