Koolilly koh! Koh silamanday ! One rotten soldier Out of line Stole a chair of honour Forcefully usurping it Claiming he did that for us all
He of the chapped lips Was so small as in undernourished Now we see him get fatter by the day Eating all our cake Leaving not even crumbs for us to pick He at times dashes handfuls of dosh To make us believe he is good Only making us wonder where he gets that from
There he goes in splendour Riding in style yet we remember him scorn The former rulers of wasteful extravaganza Wondrous turn of events We just gaze amazed at this crazy punk For whom we are so stupid That we cannot tell if he lies or not In silence we watch his show Which is coming to an end Fool that he is thinks This is just the beginning Which it is but of the end

aw karenken!-you are funny in jola
This is a good opening bashing. During Childhood, when our mates do something wrong, we reveal it to others, notably our parents or brothers. This opening signifies that. I am sure Kons appreciates this opening as he is such a tradtional man.

| If you did not translate your words in Jola I would have been caught with my pants down, being a fifth columnist , a jola of the tenth generation born and brought up among Fula, Wollof and Mandinka gentry so guess what I was lost tout a fait !My Jola needs more than polishing in fact I need to go back to my roots and learn the rudiments of my culture and language , what a big mighty shame huh!those fine days of our perfect childhood bliss, we surely did play mischief on our mates especially those who do bad deeds and make others suffer a joint punishment just because no one wants to report the wrong doer/s. |

Kolili Koh as rightly said, was used to intimidate other mates into accepting your point of view especially when you know of a secret that they do not want known.
I used to get mangoes- and ripe ones as bribery. The words are dreadful to the one who committed an offense and trying to cover his tracks.
It was a way of survival in the group and it comes handy to a poor fellow who was not strong enough to fight his way through the group.
You have taken me down memory lane.
I did not know it has some Jola meaning too. I never knew what the words meant, but i do know it was a warning to someone that his secrets will no longer be secrets.
Was it like the story of a Wolof native travelling through a Jola region and when night fell, he begged to sleep in the village.
While he was sitting by a big fire warming himself, he noticed that elders were filing by him saying
KUNYU LAK, KUFI TOK which is very similar in Wollof meaning " Who are we roasting, the one sitting"
He ran for his life shortly afterwards thinking that the fire that was lit was to be used to kill him. Word sounds can have different meanings in different languages.
Just thought i should share the joke. |

Bro Kaanibaa
You are right about our spoken Jola. I have blood aunties who are Jolas, actually decendants of Basseh, cassamance. I grew among them as well.

I swear you turned my jaws to vibrating pieces. The wollof man was never wrong. I would run helter-skelter as well. Thanks to you, Momodou and the rest of your admin team for a well moderated and friendly forum always. It is human to take every opportunity available to always renew love, respect, gratefulness and togetherness. The horns of the cow will soon echo aloud again -inshallahu rabi, a very nice lasting Gainako design that Demba have for you all. I think the many of you must be ready to pick up columns as the editorial team decides. That is the only way we can all put things together as one, for the greater good ahead. I wish you all well.

| Bro Dalton I browsed that website recently and saw some changes going on but now that is blank, it seems you guys are working on some graphic designs that would bring a better outlay of the news outlet for us. I await eagerly the return of the cow and the bells that alert us all daily, till then wishing you luck. Kons that was very funny and I went berserk as I read that piece, my madam sat looking at me amazed , I could not explain why for a long long time.Great man well done ! |
