The vociferous voices are silent
the partisan bickering ebbs
the moment of truth draws closer
the garment of ethnic pride
worn sleekly up our tattered sleeves
divisive and condescending
it brings to the fore
the latent ethnic biases
the drumbeat of proud tribal warriors
deafens the polluted political battlefield.

We stand accused
our loyalty is deeply ingrained
buried deep in our subconscious mind
that we are first and foremost
a Wollof, Mandinka, Fula or Jola
a Serer, Manjago, Serahule or Pepel
and the hypocrisy of our intellectual nuances
falls falt on its deceitful face;
we parade ourselves as genuine patriots
our allegiance unabashedly ethnic centered
with a perceived interest motivation
our passionate chorus
a disharmonious appeal to an opposition divided.

*****

The gates of their hell stood wide ajar
and their conscience imprisioned;
their sense of decency stripped naked.
They marched through the gates of this hell
their rendezvous with destiny
the hell of their atrocities;
they breathe with unrepentant perfidy
and puff in this abode of treacherous disrepute.

The gates of their hell stood wide ajar
with their godly posture and arrogant disposition
with their crude mentality and unbridled appetite
to dominate and to exploit
to satiate from the excesses of power;
they marched through the gates of their hell
the hell of their gluttony;
they drip with the blood of the innocent
they soak in the tears of a people hungered;
a people impoverished
a people maligned and robbed.

Perfidy ,greedy and tribalistic tendencies abound in the current political field. Making our country fall on it's knees groaning with the burden of harsh rule imposed on us. Blaming dessent as unpatriotic etc this brother is a cancer that is eating at the root and fabric of our realm and the people improverished , a people maligned were turely robbed of their rights so they suffer injustice. This and more I can read from your poem, more than than these though brother you have poured out a heartfelt cry. Prayers then that things would change for the benefit of us all ameen.

You shed your tears in the dark
bitter, impeach and shameful
and you groan under the weight
of your heavy burden.

You bury your pain in the hot sand
pulsating, biting and acute
and your face crowds with the wrinkles
of your painful laughter.

Why do you close your bloodshot eyes
to the carnage?
why do you look with dazed stupor
at the walking skeletons?
You turned a deaf ear to their agonized pleading.

Cry, cry the smiling coast country
you weep with dry tears in your heart
let your anguish voices
let your muffle voices
thunder from the hilltop
let your fire burn
under the weight of their callousness;
you muse with drench fatigue
they tear apart the girdle around your waist
your maligned image shred
your face tarnished
and your ego bruised
they wallow in the unquenchable thirst
the sinful pride of their bloody greed.

Why are you so silent?
why do you refuse to growl
and snarl your teeth?
You strut with utter disgust
to the banquet of their unscrupulous shame.

The rays of hope
shine and flicker and illuminate
the tattered remnants
of our gloomy past;
our broken hearts and tired limbs
our sunken spirits and hopeless dreams
hang on our necks like a chain of sorrow.

The rays of hope
strengthens our sinews and bones
with vigor and vitality;
our mangled hopes and aspirations
now an oasis of determination and intent
and with a defiant resolution
the flagbearer
walks us through the dark alleys
and through our painful path
and together we bring forth
a new day in our peaceful homeland.

Late into the night
the ground became silent
the restless spirits
morosely tread
in the eerie darkness
and I stood at the verandah
peered long into the darkness
the tears of sadness
joylessly stream from my eyes.

I cried for the future
uncertain what it might unravel
I cried for the present
the warmth and affection
of those whom
I would leave behind.

Late into the night
the ground became silent
I stood at the verandah
peered long into the dark emptiness
and I cried.

My heart silently sobbs
the pain of separation
a nagging burden
the scars of sadness
etched gloomily in my tired face.

But I kept the faith
and hope
like a creeping plant
that grew in undergrowth
meandered towards the light
and blossoms into a beauteous flower.

You are the seed of my loin
the root of your tender tendrils
runs through my sinews and bones
my flesh and blood
you whom I bathe at the foot of the well.

You came into my heart once again
after the long painful separation
as a beautiful sturdy grown woman.

The sunken eye sockets
are deep as a well
their sensual ebullience gone
and staring vaguely
at the angel of death
the emaciated body
like the skeletal remains
of a starfish writhes
in pain and in agony
yearning to gasp in
the last dying breathe
the tired limbs and feeble toes
eternally rested.

The hand slits and
become immerse in blood
the deeds of the past
witness the pains of the present
and death frowns
at the moans and groans
the teary hollow eyes haunted
and beneath the bed
of earthly riches and power
and beneath the bed
of wicked hands and evil faces
rages the fury tongues
of wagging fingers
and clench-fisted angry demons.

Come, and come you angel of death
grant that we die peacefully
in our slumber without pain or agony
and a graceful prayer in our lips.
