Snippet: The promotion of a clean and healthy environment worthy of human habitation, has always been the utmost priority of the Kanifing Municipal Council, particularly under the leadership of Major Yankuba Colley.

I don't understand. shouldn't waste collection be a function of the State/Council? Doling the function out to a foreign company is robbing Gambians of honest employment. Doesn't it? In effect what is happening is: The Govt. tax Gambians, give the taxes to foreigners for services which Gambians can do, thus denying Gambians of employment opportunities. |

I think that you maybe misunderstand what I meant, yes, it is the function of the Council, but what many councils throughout the world have found is that they can control what is happening and make the collection better if they let OUTSIDE MANAGEMENT deal with it for them,as contractors, for example no staff problems,no dealing with complaints ,no problems ensuring that the vehicles work, no need to ensure that the fuel is paid for, normally, existing staff are taken on to do the job,BUT if their work is unsatisfactory or they are constantly late or unreliable or they sabotage things, then consequences happen,in other words they maybe sacked and someone else gets a job something that does not happen within local government generally, the council can then monitor the contractor and if they are not up to the job sack them, for instance if many people complain that their rubbish is not being collected.I dont know what the terms of the contract are with this company so I can only say what GENERALLY happens. There Must be money involved so I bet everyone will have to pay a charge. But it appears that the householder can have his own collector and pay him instead,I suspect taht everyone will have to pay this charge, even if they say they have a private collection service. |

Waste collectin should be done by an entity most efficient. If the private company does better job than state, then it should be done by them. Wheather it is a company from senegal, mongolia or mars.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

One thing that does concern me is that I can find no mention of the company on the internet very strange that as almost every company can be found so "following the arrival of the head of the expatriate staff from Green Seeds Incorporated, a waste management consultancy firm in Canada."(quote from The Point) is a little mysterious lets see what happens. |
