Toubab, anyone who knows a bit about Mesoamerican cultures will notice at first sight that they show the Aztec, not the Mayan calendar in this article. Mayas and Aztecs didn't only live in different geographical regions, they also had different cultures, though there was a stronger Aztec influence during the late classical period (ca. 250 - 900 AD). This is the first indication that this text is somewhat dubious.
José Argüelles is a famous esoteric, but I don't trust those people too much. Most of them are shrewd wackos. This is what Wikipedia says about Argüelles and his way to handle and misinterpret the Mayan Calendar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Arguelles
I don't know why the Mayas attract so many of those 'New Age'-esoterics. I could roll on the floor laughing when I read all that nonsense about the Mayan origin from 'Atlantis', about crystal skulls etc. Even a notorious drunkard and racist like Mel Gibson misappropriates this admirable culture: In his lousy film 'Apocalypto' he reveals more about his ignorance than about Mayan history and culture. I don't know why those Hollywood *****s are not even able to memorize simple historical dates...
My conclusion: Don't believe this Armageddon humbug. |

Thats good then ! I thought that I would join in with all this talk of doom and gloom and perhaps have a laugh, Bantaba in Cyberspace members have a lot of interesting facets about them I would agree that the chances of the world coming to an end in 2012 is probabably not going to happen, but who knows, one thing is for certain if you placed a bet that it would and you won you wouldn't be around to collect your winnings. Ah...wikipedia again..........and you an expert!

Thanks, toubab. Do you mean a Wikipedia expert? And why ? No, really, the Maya culture interested me from my childhood. When I saw Mayan sculptures, those incredibly eccentric masterpieces, for the first time in a book, I was stunned. Since then, I love this ancient culture. And if there is an afterworld, I will beat up Diego de Landa, the Spanish bishop who destroyed almost all of the remaining Mayan books in the 16th century. Hijo de puta, he may burn in hell.

No, I did not mean you to think that you were a wikipeda expert, but you were an expert on the topic I raised i.e. the Maya culture, and that too many people quote wikipedia as a good and reliable source, I don't believe it is,Again the amount of knowlegde of members of Bantaba in Cyberspace is surprising, sometimes a fresh subject to join the usual topics that do get a little stale after lengthy discussions (?)is good. Serenata you keep on getting stunned with ancient culture! |
