Im glad to hear the three people were released. I was a friend of Mr. Balajo when he lived in Senegal. I'm wondering if there is someway to get a message to him and his family.

Pls see news article below about the release of Mr. Dibba and Mr.
Balajo on April 18th. from the Independent Last Line on Mr. Balajo..

SM Dibba Released
Tuesday 18th April 2006

By Pap Saine

Sheriff Mustapha Dibba, former Speaker of the National Assembly, was on Saturday released from detention at the Mile Two Central Prisons, after spending barely ten days, reliable sources informed The Point.

He was detained following an allegation that he was involved in the 21 March abortive coup.

Mr Dibba, 69, served as Speaker of The Gambia National Assembly from January 2002 to March 2006.

Mr Dibba joined active politics in 1960. From 1962 to 1970, he served as Minister at various ministries including Local Government, Works, and Finance.

A veteran politician, Mr Dibba became the first Vice-President of The Gambia in 1970 and served for about two years.

From 1972 to 1974, he was Gambia’s ambassador to Belgium and the EU. In 1974 and 75, he was minister of Economic Planning.

He resigned from the PPP in July 1975, and in September 1975 formed his National Convention Party (NCP) and contested for presidency in the presidential elections of 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1996 and 2001.

After the 2001 presidential election, which the APRC won, Mr Dibba formed an alliance with the APRC. He was later appointed Speaker of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, a former senior officer of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Kemo Balajo, was also released, our sources added.

By Pap Saine & Pa Modou Faal

According to reliable sources yesterday seven detainees have been released namely Madi Ceesay, General Manager of the Independent Newspaper and also President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU); Musa Saidykhan, Editor-in-Chief of the Independent Newspaper; Raif Diab, a businessman; M.C. Cham, a veteran politician; Lai Conteh, former Mayor of KMC; Ramzia Diab, former Member of the National Assembly; and Musa Dibba, a former NIA financial director. hi jambo, the point website is up and working, just to let you know. I found this on the Point about AlHagie Nyabally. Pls see below.

Detained Alhagie Nyabally’s Wife Expressed Worry
Monday 24th April 2006

By Abba A S Gibba

Kaddy Samateh, wife of former Gambia Student Union president Alhagie Nyabally, who is presently detained, has expressed fear about her husband’s condition in detention.

Mrs Samateh-Nyabally, who walked into our offices last week to allay her fears about the arrest of her husband, said since he was picked up last Monday by security personnel, Alhagie has been held incommunicado.

According to Mrs Nyabally, the two officers who picked up her husband at home identified themselves as Lamin Saidyleigh and Modou Bojang.

She said few minutes after her husband was arrested and whisked away, she called him on his cell phone to know his whereabouts.

Nyabally, she explained, told her he was informed they were going to Serrekunda Police Station but instead were heading to Brikama.

She said she later called her husband again, and he said they were at the Yundum Police Station.

Mrs Nyabally said when she and other family members went to the station to check on her husband, they were told he was not there.

As they were about to leave the station, she added, Mr Nyabally called her from inside the cells but were not allowed to talk to him.

They were subsequently sent away from the station, she said, adding that since then she had been denied access to or communication with her husband.

She is therefore appealing to the authorities concerned to release her husband.

I spoke to some senior NIA officers who told me that Mr. Nyabally's arrest was in connection of a purported student demonstration he was planning instigate during the commoration of the 2000 bloody student riot. They told me that they believe Mr. Nyabally was preparing communiques for the student body and thereby seeking international support for the purported demonstration. Seven of his computers were confiscated but no illegal document was found.
