ONE DAY
One day several years ago A flag was lowered to a bugler's horn Fluttering down the pole Which it adorned for many past years That signaled the end of an era To be replaced in pride By the red white blue white green
Forty and four years has gone by Marking our growth Tempered joy Fill our breast today That we have another cause to sigh That flag flutters The signals though are faint The bugler blows the horn All I hear is a sad note Of melancholy and hope That perhaps it heralds The beginning of an end
The lowering of the flag That distant day Witnessed great expectations Alas now it's hoister Dips the edge of trust and hope Sadly set aside for another ceremonial That what we had was less significant Now beats my imagination As others with pride Reminisce their attained status of freedom We decided to place it in a darkish corner For termites to eat it away
The bugle though sends The last post Serenading the ascent or decent Of this honorable flag Which the valiant fathers Fought so hard to gain Now in a darkish corner it lies in shame As we another ceremonial give presidence Till it once more regains It's rightful place in the realm For that we most pray Towards that we strive and work each day As long as blood runs in our veins Amen

National Flag
Red-Sun;White-Peace;Blue-R.Gambia;white-Peace; and Green-Agriculture.
The flag combination is very interesting. We have natural sunshine almost thoughout with a river that runs right through the country's length (R. Gambia). We have a greenery season, otherwise the rainy season which provides food for Gambians.The "Peace" which appears twice has been prostituted seriously. This is a serious concern.
Ode that Gambia! Long live her peaceful nature!
happy celebrations!

Kons;
Did you also sing "God Save the Queen" then?
It is interesting that was it. Without notice, the ordinary people were not even offered prayers or blessings, time and again, so the Queen and her decendants became richer and mightier always, and the ordinary ...and God knows what.
"God Save the People."

I sure did. You cannot but feel with hindisight, sorry when police uniforms were shorts like school children and when King George V died, people were required to mourn whether you like it or not. Officers and personnel of the colonial administration wore black bands of cloth on their arms for almost three months as a sign of respect for the decesed King.
The footballl park called KG5 in Banjul was named after King George V.
It was good that we had independence.

Can we compare that experience to the Portuguese Guinean one, where the locals/natives were subjected to forced labor and the ''falmatora'' Tortures etc.The police would jump at an arrested person telling him 'ntartang contrall' meaning I have long been telling you even though that was the first time they met.That way the guy would be deemed as a habitual offender and thus irredeemably corrupt; deserving any punishment.In this case flogging by the police using leather tongues in public.The Gambian experience in the colonial era was not as bad as that of the Guineans, they even had to fight a liberation war to gain independence.This statement does not in any way justify the colonization of our country by Britain.Now that we have attained just that we have another gain that is a dictatorial regime , which If i was asked I would throw away and go back to colonial rule. |
