Funny they call it music video, this is an extract from the film Keita:The Voice of a Griot directed by Dani Kouyate from Burkina Faso. I bought a special edition of the whole video a couple of years ago. It is a very fascinating and beautiful film. Dani Kouyate now lives in Sweden, I saw him two days ago.
Just some spelling correction, toubab... |

Thanks for this Santa. A wonderful video. Having read Sunjata's epic I really enjoyed it eventhough its not the whole film. I almost got emotional in certain parts of the film - I had to pull myself together. There was only one other film that has ever got me to that state and that was maaladoo by the great Ousman Sembene may he rest in peace. Brilliant cast and director. This is the first time I have seen this film. When did it come out? where can I get a copy? |

Moolaadé is available on amazon.com and so are most of Sembene´s films. Two of his older masterpieces Black Girl and Borrom Sarret are on youtube as entire films. I posted the links last year. |

1.Maalaadoo: - is about female circumcision. The women rise up to ensure the women elders who perform the act on them are shamed as well as the men. In that film, Samebene's daughter is in it.
2. Xala: - a rich politician who end up marrying a younger lady until he find out the 'gentleman of the house' no longer works.
3. Guelwar: - based on the guelwar dynasty of sine. I recommend you read the book first before watching the video. I have seen the film many years ago. I still have the book with with but can't find the film. I'll do anything to see that film again.
4. My favourite book of his is: - God's Bits of Wood. It concerns the railway strikes pre-senegal's independence. It lays the foundation for their independence from France.

Santanfara, why don´t you come and see me, we can watch together and I would explain everything for you…
Seriously, Borom Sarret is on the tube, in two pieces but the length is only 17 minutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eISS-5bWNQ part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9FO-9CZNYQ&feature=related part 2
The borom sarret is a very religious man, just like you, with occasional disorders, just like you
Black girl is about a young Senegalese woman who were asked to come to France by a French family who just left Senegal for France, to become children’s nurse. Se was immediately put to cleaning work, cooking and so on which she never done before. Her life became so miserable that she eventually took her own life. The end scene, the monsieur travelling back to Senegal to bring back her few belongings, some money and a mask she had given to the family is unforgettable.
One of Sembenes main themes is strong women whilst men usually are weak and even ridicule themselves.
But, far from home, the "black girl" could not overcome the pain.
