Point of View: A TRIBUTE

19 Jan 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Suntou Touray, UK

Vision of a people
Hearts united in kindness
Just the ordinary people
A wee bit fortunate
But still concern, caring and loving
They see beyond the horizon
A people far away
In lands of warmth and smiles
Good people, nice persons, yet some in-need

The distance of the land, the stars, the oceans, the sun and moon

Is never a barrier

GETSUK-ED WAS BORN
A monumental idea
The goal of enhancing others in learning and social welfare

Engendering and providing decent facilities for the young

And old improving them in better things

GETSUK-ED
Your service to our people is a thankful one

An honourable sacrifice
Of wealth, time, energy and dividing your love

Reaching throughout by individual donations,

not by the mega rich

The average Sue, Andy, Barbara and Frank

Our racial and cultural difference is not an issue

Humanity in proper perspective
GETSUK, The Gambia Thank You
Long may the charity lives!
Amen.

Thanks for that, Santa! It's nice to read something positive about GTS/GETS UK for a change as there seems to be a nasty whisper campaign on the go .... negative postings on other forums ...

santa, it is nice to hear about GETS, i think the whispers come from the fact that when you visit the main office, people do not have much knowledge of what is going on, they are polite, but there is something missing. i have visited a few times for information but have come away empty handed,
Once we went for a meal and they had no fish, but I know they have helped the community. when i first visited the office the son of the owner was there and he was so helpful, knowledgeable and chatty and in this day and age that is what you need.
i hope they keep up the good works, time will tell.

Great poem Santanfara

Its a shame the office and resturant are not run more efficently but its been going downhill for a while sadly.

I just really hope they can sort these issues out as the work they do is extremley worthwhile and very important, hopefully if people raise these concerns with the management etc they can be addressed im sure they dont want bad publicity

For those of you who have comments on the service or whatever at GTS, may I suggest that you contact Francis directly (Francis@getsuk.org)as I'm sure he'd appreciate the information. He did ask quite recently on the GTS website forum for people to let him know about any issues surrounding the restaurant, etc so that he could address them.

As Hiz P so rightly states "the work they do is extremely worthwhile and very important".

MeMe, thank u for advising the above.
I was already in the midst of posting a reply, so there is a repeat of your advice etc.,

Santanfara, lovely poem – u read the people behind Gambia Education & Teaching Support (GETSuk) charity well.

MeMe, I understood the postings on another forum involved Gambia Tourist Support (GTS) & the Bar/ Restaurant, which Francis advised on the GTS forum, has been acted upon.
GTS registered in The Gambia 2003 & GETSuk registration in UK is separate charities with different objectives but with same chairman.

Jambo - In the beginning Gambian personnel employed by GETSuk manned the office and should have been able to give you guidance to GETSuk if it involved sponsorship of any description. Unless it was more than four yrs ago. BUT staff in the beginning became OVERLOADED they were attempting to balance vital tourist support, organize trips, catering & driving/accommodation responsibilities to earn the funds to maintain their employment.
GETSuk were aware of the problems as we were trying to build up; A mature administrator was employed by GETSuk, there were difficulties. Helen Touray now mans it voluntarily, plus Kumba & Francis.

The GETSuk office use to be in Francis Glynn briefcase when he also was working full time in the UK. http://www.getsuk.org/projects/OFFICE%202008.htm now a building but is in need of office equipment.

Sorry about your fish also but as u know GETSuk has no responsibility for the buying of food in the restaurant. But Adam is a good chatterbox & listener. Have another go!

Up until last year there were four persons all with their own full time employment in the UK attempting in their spare time to build up GETSuk in the UK via fundraising to fund employment in The Gambia, fund projects http://www.getsuk.org/projects/projects.htm plus find sponsorship for students which now nears a hundred – scroll past the photo'shttp://www.getsuk.org/sponsoring/studentsponsoring.htm

You will find all GETSuk contacts at http://www.getsuk.org/contacts.htm including chairman Francis Glynn who resides in The Gambia.

The past years for both charities have been no easy ride - please e-mail any complaints or ideas they will be gratefully received and acted upon.

Your comments have been forwarded to the GTS/GETSuk office.
