Hi Jamba,

It is a day to be happy. It depicts the traditions of Prophet Ebraheem, continued by Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be Upon them both). It also coincides with the pilgrimage in Mecca, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is very rewarding to spill blood today, as in slaughtering a ram, camel, cow, et cetera...

No matter what circumstances you find yourself in, you should still be joyous and celebrate God's mercy. In short, Eid-ul adha (tabaski) is short for feast of 'blood sacrifice.

Are you a Muslim jamba?
If no, what do you like about Islam so far?

Regards,
Dalton

no, i am christian, but every year i hear my "family" in Gambia celebrate tobaski, but I have never had it described to me.
do you visit friends, give gifts.
i know that if you can you slaughter (or get slaughtered ) an animal but i did feel that some families went into debt for the new clothes, shoes, killing of animal etc, They had lost the spirit of the festival.
The family i sent the clothes to are so excited, for me it was donations, 2nd hand clothes but to them it was like brand new, so everyone is happy. i called over the week end and could here it in their voices.
is tobaski only celebrated in africa.

I was in Gambia when Tobaski fell at new year.
The family I go to had a goat to kill.
We went to the Mosque for prayers.
Most people had on new clothes.

I would say it was a big celebration, similar to an old fashioned Christian Easter. A fresh start, new clothes etc.....

Eid is celebrated by Muslims across the world.

Tobaski is wonderful, going to prayers gives one a great feeling, feeling of Gud being everywhere, just impossible to describe but makes one feel so calm and happy. I wish I was in the Gambia tomorrow, see people happy...Happy Tobaski to everyone!

thanks Bev and inez.

Jamba, you are right. It is a day to be happy. whatever is within parametrs of happiness, you are encouraged to pursue that. You are encouraged to wear good clothes, scents, smile, greet and visit people....sort of unification. You are encouarged to share with the poor, sick and the needy. It was the tradition of prophet Ebraheem that was continued by Muhammad (Peace be upon them both.)

lastly, in regards to the debt, you are encouraged to live within your means....but you know humans will like to adjust always, just like christians will do on christmas.

with love,

Dalton

Its a strong community time. Everyone prays together and then goes visiting. Old fueds forgotten, new bonds made.
I witnessed the slaughter of the goat. Its done respectfully and seriously and nothing is wasted. Its shared out with neighbours and friends. Enjoyed as a treat.
I loved my Tobaski day in Pirang. Will never never forget it.

One of the millions of people making the pilgrimmage to Mecca was Omar Regan, a Hollywood actor who appeared as a double for Chris Tucker in the film Rush Hour 2.
